Re: Geophagus and Discus?
A few years ago I had adult wilds with a group of red head tapajos. In my experience, the geos would outcompete the discus for food. So much to the point that the discus would become shy and intimidated during feeding. That was my own experience though and I do see a lot of discus/geo tanks online so maybe it'll work out for you.
Re: Geophagus and Discus?
I agree with the above. I've seen the geo + discus combination done plenty times before, but have always preferred dwarf SA Cichlids that way no one out competes the discus during feedings. Have you researched the below:
laetacara
crenicara punctulatum
dicrossus filamentosus (a favorite of mine)
cleithracara maronii
guianacara
these are all similar to geos in personality but are smaller and less intimidating during feeding.
Re: Geophagus and Discus?
Well, unlike all my other tanks that I have set up in the last 15 years, discus are not the highlight of this tank, the geophagus are.
I dont want to substitute the geophagus that I want in order to add discus to the tank.
I will need to reconsider then, I suppose, getting a larger tank for my discus and not adding them to the geophagus tank.
Re: Geophagus and Discus?
You could always try and then adjust...
But I have to agree with the others, geo's are fierce big mouthed eaters, even if they don't mean to, their eagerness at feeding time can be a stresser
Re: Geophagus and Discus?
Yeah, I wouldn't want to stress my discus after all the hard work I have put into growing them out.
Besides the time and expense I have put into them, I am very attached to them.

I agree here. To have success with discus, its pretty important to put them first and all other fish secondary. You could do a small school of altum angels with your geos, they would be able to compete during feeding times better than the discus I think. Could you upgrade the discus to their own tank, and use the 60gal cube as the sump for your 180?

Re: Geophagus and Discus?
I have 2-Fx6 on my 180 gallon. I dont think I need a sump.
but, the 60 I can use for something else.
I have recently became interested in collecting rare South American characins... so can use the 60 for that.
Re: Geophagus and Discus?
I keep trying to fix the pictures so there aren't duplicates, but, just keep making it worse... Ill just leave it alone :/

now that is a good plan. another tank is always a good plan :D
Re: Geophagus and Discus?
Altums... someone else had suggested that to me before.
I think I saw some wilds on Wetspots availability list.
How many in a small school for a tank this size?

Lol! Tell my husband that... :)
Re: Geophagus and Discus?
6 altums would be nice, depending on how many geos, you might could go 8. Altums and geos occupy different parts of the tank so they would make good partners.
