Re: How do I set up my first discus tank?
Thank you for your feedback! I'll wait until I have a bigger space for them then.

What if you got say a 30 gallon, even a super cheap used one, set it up as a quarantine tank and house 3 or 4 discus in there and quarantine them for 2 months while you setup a bigger tank?
This would really get you starting off right!
Re: How do I set up my first discus tank?
Is there any distinct way to tell a male from female?

In theory yes . But in practise , the most experienced breeders here will tell you that its a 50/50 guessing odds.
Re: How do I set up my first discus tank?
Well, I'm doing a similar setup:
Top Fin 55 gallon standard HOB filter, 1x filter sponge rated for 75 gallon tank, would two be O.K.? Air hose running these.
Nice heater of proper size for a 55 gallon.
Lights, nothing special, just stock compact bulbs that can't even grow plants so the tank will be dark. I'll follow the water change guidelines, but I have a question in regards to cleaning filters
How often do you clean the sponge filters, do you squeeze and scrub them under the faucet? Same with the HOB, I also read on here to remove the carbon.
Im planning to do 8-10 juvenile discus as a growout.

Equipment
55 gallon bare bottom tank.
Aqua clear 500 (two internal sponges - one prefilter sponge on the intake)
250 Watt heater and thermometer. Temp 84 degrees
Siphon hose to clean tank
Water storage container (pump and hose optional)
Discus
6 - 10 healthy juvenile discus from a reputable breeder
Care
50% daily water change with aged (dechlorinated, warmed, aerated) tap water.
Wipe down inside of tank with paper towels at least every week.
Rinse prefilter daily, sponges and internal filter once a month.
Food
Feed juveniles 4 - 6 times per day. (Quality flakes and bits, black worms, beefheart) Don't overfeed.
Grow out the juveniles in this tank with no additions. You will have to remove some discus as they grow. These can be sold to other hobbiests or the local fish store. A 55 gallon tank will hold 5 or 6 fully grown discus
Hi I have a 150 gallon tank and I want to set it up for discus but I want to know what's the best filters and other essential items I need for the tank and it doesn't matter on the price. Thanks

What is the purpose of wiping the inside walls with paper towel?
Re: How do I set up my first discus tank?
No cross contamination after wiping with paper towel .....throw it away.....been doing this way since I started keeping discus.

Hi Carol. As a beginner, I would like to ask u a few questions. In ur opinion, what's the best algae eater to be paired with discus?
I also have plants in my tank, so the algae eaters should be friendly with both my discus and plants.
thanks Carol.

Re: How do I set up my first discus tank?
Last I heard of Carol Roberts that she is breeding French bulldogs.
Re: How do I set up my first discus tank?
Last I heard she was crossing the Frienchis with Chihuahua's. If she were a backyard breeder or cranking them out like a puppy mill I would hate that. But Carol is a good breeder with integrity and I'm sure she's working for a certain type of dog. I don't object to cross breeds as long as the breeder is working toward a type that will breed true. The possibilities of that cross is very interesting to me.
