Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
I have an Angelfish pair, they have laid eggs twice already, what is the nth time until they get it right? I know for discus it takes the 3rd, 4th or 5th try. Wondering if Angelfish are the same?
On there first try the eggs didn't stick and fell to the bottom, so they ate it, and then the second batch was eaten right after it was laid. I then separated them for a couple of weeks so that they can re-bond/heal/rest/re-condition themselves back up before I put back together again, I put them back together this morning and it looks like they are ready to spawn again in the next day or so.
Re: Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
I pull the eggs as soon as the pair is done doing their thing. I have about 300 growing right now from a pair. They have successfully fertilized 3 batches. I didnt need anymore so I let them tend to their next eggs on their own and they ate them prior to wiggler stage. They are in a community tank so that may have something to do with it. Artificially raising them is not that hard and better than waiting for the pair to figure it out.

1st video is my free swimmers about a week old right now. 2nd video is the batch about 3 weeks old. That stuff floating around in the first video is during a feeding of live baby brine shrimp.

Thanks, that is probably my mistake then, I thought the parents would care for the eggs and fry.
Re: Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
They can but many times don't. They will care for the eggs but you need to feed the fry about 12 hours after they all go free-swimming.

Thanks Mike, what would you recommend I feed when they go free swimming? Not sure if hatched-brine shrimp would be too big at that stage?
I was going to let the parents try to raise them again, but I'll try to pull them this time around.

baby brine shrimp is all I feed them when they go free-swimming. Once they start showing fin growth, i start introducing them to flake food.
Re: Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
Like with discus you can't be sure you have a pair till you see wigglers. I have had two female angels look like a pair. As Mike said, angels are not like discus when it comes to raising fry. Some pairs will learn to be very good parents while others will never learn.
Re: Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
Yeah, I don't even bother to let them try. If I need the batch, I just pull the eggs immediately and into the breeder box they go. Otherwise, I leave them and they are gone pretty quickly in a community tank with plecos, ottos and other adult angels.
Re: Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
Probably been asked before but do you guys think that angel fry raised artificially never learn how to be good parents? It seems to be a common belief on angelfish forums and among old timers. It hasnt been my experience though. I think some angels ate naturally good at parent raising, other are just not. Maybe thats why they lay so many eggs so often.

Hopefully you are using Methyl Blue or Hydrogen Peroxide to keep away the fungus. you will have a better hatch rate that way. Congrats!

Yep. Can't tell by the picture but Methyl Blue is floating in there. Thanks.
Re: Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
The eggs are no longer attached to the cone, and have fallen on the aquarium floor, still opaque in color, is this expected from Angelfish eggs?
Re: Angelfish Breeding - How many tries until they get it right?
Mine normally stick the whole time until they begin wiggling. If they are not white, leave them. They will free swim from the bottom of the tank just as good as they would from the cone. I dont use a cone since mine are in a planted tank and usually lay eggs on the leaves. They have laid them right on the glass though and I have vacuumed them right into a breeder box so they will be fine.
