Bryan's Grow Out Challenge Thread 2018
First and foremost, I would like to thank Al for doing this exciting friendly competition and providing us some awesome fish. Well about myself, I'm not new to this hobby and I've breeding/raising discus since 2010. But I became more passionate about creating my own line of strain back in 2015. My main goal was to create a Giant Flora 14-bars somewhat similar to 9-bars but more refined with unique pattern. The reason for joining this competition is to explore more knowledge and gauge my skill level.
Current setup for this competition:
- 20G breeder tank
- Sponge filter up to (40G)
- Hydor 120 watts heater.
- Airstone
- 40 watts LED daylight bulb
Attachment 118500
Current parameters:
- Aged tap water treated with Seachem Safe
- 83.4F but adjusted to around 86F
- 284 TDS
- 7.4-7.8 Ph
Attachment 118501
I'll apply the same strict and proactive routine just like my other previous batches.
Such as follows:
Feeding - 4x daily
- 1st feeding 7:00 AM
- 2nd feeding 12:00 PM
- 3rd feeding 4:00 PM
- 4th feeding 7:00 PM
Note: will increase the feeding as they grow to support their rapid growth.
Water Change
- I'll be using aged tap water only until up to 6 months old
- 150%-200% water change on a daily basis.
- 1st WC 8AM either 50% or 100%
- 2nd WC 8PM or later 100%
- will wipe the tank once a week

Thanks, as long as they survive tomorrow then I'm happy.

Crossing my fingers too for tomorrow Brian .
Two Qts on your routine.
You said to use aged tap up to 6 months ? What else do you plan next and why change the curent routine at 6th month.
Why only small feeds at start ? Just to avoid bloat or is there something else to it ?
Good luck Brian and we hope for photos of discus from you tommorow .

Finally, the wait is over. They have arrived perfectly and no death so far.

I added aquarium salt one spoonful per 10 gallon and 1 and half cup of Stress Guard.

Shipping: I received them up side down from the mailman and didn't seem to be bother what it was since it doesn't have sticker saying Fragile, perishable, or handle with care.
Recommendation: Shipping fish is not new to me, I shipped fish across the state in the past as little as dime to quarter size to even adult size. One thing I learned was to ensure to put precautionary sticker or label to make them aware that the package is fragile and careful handling is a must. All in all, the packaging was excellent and didn't noticed any leaks. The water level is enough as well as the oxygen. Also the heat packs was adequate since still warm when I touch it.
Here are the stuff I used for my shipping boxes.
I created this label and printed out at my workplace. The Styrofoam shipping boxes came from my wife's work so it's free.

Bryan Im glad you got them and they are alive after being in the box since Monday..
Just a note though, every box did have a label on it that said "live fish .. this end up." It was placed on the top of the box in bright fluorescent colors.
I always do this.

I really like the stickers you had printed up. I can't do it, but there is a very nice printer run by an old couple who likes me. I need to see them for my new business cards, now that I'm grooming from home. They could make them for me and not charge me an arm and a leg. I used to do their dog before it died. They like me.
I don't ship often, but I do ship. My signature here for a while was "SHIPPING IS CURSED". The stickers are just a tiny bit of insurance that the box gets treated appropriately.

I can see you the file and edit it how the way you like it.

Great sticker Bryan , but you could have picked a better looking discus for the purpose. This one looks a bit stunted to me :) .
Good luck with your babies .
Re: Bryan's Grow Out Challenge Thread 2018
Glad the fish arrived safe and sound, even if delivered upside down Al's packaging must have coped pretty well. Wishing you all the best for the contest and thanks for stating your schedule.

Yes! Absolutely true, if it wasn't for excellent packaging. I don't think they would have survived. Sadly, the mailman didn't pay attention to the note.

You're absolutely correct, the note was there on the top portion but sadly the mailman didn't pay attention. But due to your excellent packaging, they've all made it. This is a good learning experienced for me, I'll try to ship them this way to cut cost since shipping always been a deal breaker for customers.
