What are you up to today?
After a busy week, I have nothing pressing to do today. I'm enjoying it.
It's warm here but very windy. The wind blew out the bottom half of my window which I probably didn't put in correctly after I tilted it in to clean the outside. My dear sweet neighbor who helps me when I can't do something came down and put it in for me.
I have a pot of Cajun red beans with spicy Cajun sausage almost ready. Although I need to do some house work, I'll probably take a nap after eating my red beans and rice. It's quite filling. Then it will be WC time. I usually don't have much left after I get WC done, but if I do I'll do some house cleaning. Otherwise I'll watch fish.

Re: What are you up to today?
If I was closer I would come have lunch with you. That sounds tasty!!

Glad you asked. Getting my every 10 year colonoscopy this afternoon. I kid you not>
Prep was awful.
As a reminder to all, the incidence of colon cancer is on the rise and early detection will save your life.

Re: What are you up to today?
Miserable day here, snowing and pouring down rain at the same time with 40mph winds and about 38 degrees... ugh
-
Re: What are you up to today?
It is good, Brian. I'd have been happy to feed you. I have 5 dogs politely waiting for a little treat, and of course I need to give a spoon full to my pet chicken.

I've done that twice. The prep sucks. You poop your guts out, which is what they need. At 72, I don't think I'll bother to do it again,

Don't remind me, as I skipped my scheduled conlonoscopy last year because there was a surge of Covid.

Re: What are you up to today?
Just getting over a head cold here.... past few days I was really dragging tail. I packed up and shipped out orders for today and took a quick drive to the shoreline as it was a pretty mild day here and sunny ( now its cloudy and drizzling) .. wasn't there very long just a little sea air to clear the head. Of course I did bring my camera...its part of the process for me.. It was really quiet there, usually not on a nice day, had the place to myself. I did get lucky though, we get harbor seals in Long Island Sound in the winter and the beach I walk on often is a good place to see them. I haven't seen any all winter..today I saw three.:) It turned out to be a really good walk.

Re: What are you up to today?
When I moved my aunt to my home from Florida, her dog brought his fleas with him so I spent the day eradicating them. One more pass with the carpet shampooer and I'll be done...

Re: What are you up to today?
I had the day off work. Changed serpentine belt in my truck so that I could go pickup a couple of new doors one for bathroom one for bedroom. Solid cores to replace these original early 70s hollow ones.
I got home tore out the bathroom door and what do you know... It's too wide. I bought 32" instead of 30. I can see where I got turned around, I was looking at the left hand 30s which were right next to the 32 rights... Whoops. Both installed now. Started a batch of RO so I can do some WC on the Apistos this weekend. Discus WC here in a minute. Both doors did get installed, just didn't have them done before my wife/kids got home as planned.

Re: What are you up to today?
Dang, everyone gets more stuff do than I do. But Dave, you made me feel guilty when you said that you took your dog to the groomer. I used to be a professional groomer. I'd won awards at grooming competitions. Being a groomer was how I defined myself. But that was before my back betrayed me.
But I'd been feeling guilty about how my little dog Pip was looking, and when you mentioned the groomer, I decided to do a bath and through brush out on her. She's just a small dog but she's FAT. Still, she couldn't possibly weigh more than 37 lbs. I just got done with her, gave her her squeaky toy, and lots of praise and kisses. It was enough for my back, but tomorrow she'll get a hair cut and I will be satisfied with both her and myself.

Well, Liz... I am 38 so I don't much in the way of excuses.
Seems like you do plenty!

Re: What are you up to today?
Had a good day today. 2 weeks ago my dog passed from heart disease. Only 7. Well my wife found a rescue dog and we’ve been approved and should pick him up next week. My other dog Mia has been lost without him. So took her to a family house we’re selling and grabbed a 1916 sewing machine to give to a guy who’s interested. Thing was much heavier than I thought. With the sewing machine weighing at least 30lbs. Then the table must have weighed the same. Took me and the wife to carry just the table out of the basement. But got it home and the guy was very happy with it and gave me $100. So we went out to diner. It was a good day :).
-
Re: What are you up to today?
Tom , sorry to hear about the passing of your dog.. Family pets leave a huge hole when they leave. Congratulations though on your new Family Member!
Sounds like win on the sewing machine sale and Dinner... great way to end the day.
Today is a lazy day for me.. water changes and doing odds and ends here. Its raining so no yard work.. took care of the chicken coops yesterday..normally thats a weekend chore. Today probably will candle a bunch of chicken eggs and see how many of the 22 we set up in the incubator are actually fertile.
I do need to change out a dryer vent hose today and run a cold water feed to our axolotl area...so will be doing some plumbing.

Re: What are you up to today?
It's always painful when a family member or even a pet dies. I'm sorry for anyone who has to go through that. I've been through both and it hurts to the depths of your heart.
I was a good girl this morning. I groomed my scruffy looking fat lady dog. She is more spiffy looking now, but without all the hair she looks like a pin head. She was good on the table considering she hadn't had a good groom for too long a time. When I told her that she was a thing of beauty, she believed me. At least I haven't forgotten how to do a good groom.
Then I made 2 boxes for shipments of Ram pairs I have going out Monday. Now I have a nice meal of cheesy broccoli with pasta on the stove almost ready to eat.
If I don't do anything else today it's fine with me. I'm retired, and besides, it's Saturday.

Re: What are you up to today?
made a hamburger goulash with three pounds burger mixed with two cans cream of mushroom soup spiced with the following:
Cumin
salt
black pepper
garlic powder
dehydrated onion
old bay
Then folded a load of laundry, put a load in to wash, and took a shower and cleaned out open wounds (thanks ingrown hairs, diabetes, and all).
Now to move an empty 20 gallon tall with substrate to my son's room so we can get it running with a water/vinegar mix to get the hard water cleaned up so we can then get the tank cycled and add some fish.

That sounds interesting Dave..never had it. Is it something served like a soup? Sounds like you could serve it over rice or pasta?

I ate it over a piece of bread.
My wife ate it over an english muffin.
It is kind of like chipped beef

Well playing the waiting game now. Our rescue pup is coming up from New Mexico and is now in Tennessee. Its coming with about 30 other dogs saved from a shelter there that is just overrun with dogs. I guess the covid backlash. Great thing is most of these dogs are spoken for. 2 women driven them up in a van. Seems they do this a few times a year. A pic of him now and before he was given upAttachment 134812Attachment 134813.

You just brightened up my day!

Re: What are you up to today?
Nice to see a nice dog find a good home.
-
Re: What are you up to today?
They'll be best buddies soon. You are lucky to have 2 such beautiful dogs. I only have one large dog, and he's 14 years old. The rest are little yappers, but they're good in bed on a cold night. 2 of the yappers sleep under the covers, one on my right side, one on my left.
I couldn't find my phone yesterday night when I went to bed. I instigated a search this morning. I looked everywhere several times and didn't see it. I was just about to take my scooter up to my neighbor Shawn and ask him to call my number several times. I got on the scooter, looked an the basket on front and there was my phone. I have no memory of putting it there and no idea why I would put it there. But at least I found it which was a big relief.
All I have to do now is to do animal care, change the bed sheets, and make a meatloaf and some turnip greens simmered with bacon. Of course, I should clean house, but I'd rather just play out side. It's 80 degrees here in February which is unheard of. I want to enjoy it.

Sure brings back memories. This is my buddy Jack on the day I got him. He was a boxer/mastiff mix, looked like a boxer but weighed 125lbs. He was the most well behaved, yet animated dog I've met. He loved everything from my cats, to small dogs (he thought he was small) and especially little kids. The only thing he hated was squirrels, lol... I adopted him after a tornado destroyed Joplin, MO and he lost his family...

On the other hand, this is Alfie. A very good boy but dumb as a box of rocks.

Alfie looks sweet, but dumb as a stump. Jack is smart and loyal. I have a dog who's sweet but dumb. He's so sweet and dumb that you can't help but love him. He's the dog in my avatar at his graduation from obedience school. His name is Big Head.

Re: What are you up to today?
Brian Jack does look like a boxer. My Mia is a mix. Was sold as a boxer and looked like a boxer. Has a ton of energy. But knows when to stop. Something boxers just don’t know. Named this guy Finn. I’ve had boxers for about 15 yrs. My last guy Guinness was just a great dog. Never a problem Attachment 134828 just lived too short a life. That’s him just before he died. His heart was too big. These are my first 2 Piper and Rusty.Attachment 134829 Piper was also a rescue. Got her a year after I got Rusty. She was 2 at the time.

Hit 39 yesterday in Minnesota. One more degree and it's shorts weather!

Re: What are you up to today?
Going to hit mid 40s today in CT. I would love to head out to the shore sometime today but unfortunately I am home bound..need to move a few cords of firewood this morning. Planning on converting a 12x15 space under my deck to an axolotl room. Eventually I have a special needs brother that is moving in here.. he will get my office/fishroom and I will convert the axolotl room to my office/ discus space. Its going to be alot of work and expense but you have to do what you have to do.

Re: What are you up to today?
going to do a water change on my 75 gallon... then am going to look at setting up an inline UV filter on the Fluval 406 return line to the 75 gallon tank.
Also might move the 20 from the oldest son's room (he done grew up and moved out) to my youngest son's room so I can get it started. I have a sponge filter I will get running in my 75 gallon and some Seachem bacteria to start the cycle on that tank when we get it going. I am going to run it with either a bleach/water, vinegar/water, or H202/water combination to get rid of the limescale/hard water inside the tank, and then will run the filter (A/C 50) with a water/H202 combination to kill any bad bacteria in the sponge media.
I also will take the patient paperwork to a new clinic 15 miles away as my doc passed in January, and she was younger than I was.
I may try to add a sling to a shotgun.
Not working today as my fasting glucose was 404 without any carbs yesterday... I think it is due to pain levels from open wounds (ingrown hairs/calcified hair follicles), lack of regenerative sleep, and lack of exercise as the wounds have kept me off the bike.

Re: What are you up to today?
Man Dave, you are dealing with some stuff. It's a shame you can't sleep. I would be in a pickle if I weren't good at sleeping because my spine requires me to take pressure off it. I get in bed, close my eyes and I'm gone for the night.
It is so fabulously beautiful this March day I yearn to plant my summer veggie garden. If the back would allow it, I would take a spading fork and turn over the whole plot. But I have stumbled upon the answer to not being able to dig.
I ordered some large items last fall. I got a hot water heater, a medium size TV, and a gas heater for my fish room. Instead of putting the boxes on the burn pile I just laid them out in my garden to smother the weeds and decompose to help the soil. They don't require any hard lifting. I'm always on the lookout for boxes to ship fish in. I notice dumpsters full of already broken down boxes that are headed to the land fill. What a waste!!!! I can use these in my vegetable patch. I can't believe that I am so slow that it just occurred to me after half the plot was covered with my cardboard boxes.

Re: What are you up to today?
Spent the morning working on the hen houses.. added some nesting boxes and moved the birds to different flocks as we were having some dominant hen issues. Then took our rooster for a walk . Red gets it in his thick bird brain from time to time that he is the head honcho of the barn yard. Its a great trait for a rooster when it comes to protecting his flock from a predator... its not so great when he decides you are the predator. So I enrolled him in therapy. From time to time if he gets a little big for his britches we spend some quality time together . I grab him and literally walk around the yard with him. Putting him in a position where he is clearly not the head honch usually mellows him out for weeks. He is a big rooster but his spurs are still small.. better to train him now than when he is able to really do damage.. Thankfully his dad , ozzy, is a gentle fellow as his spurs are close to 3 inches long and would do some serious damage..
Now its time to do water changes

Re: What are you up to today?
Way back when I bred dairy goats I had some chickens, too One day I was walking to the bucks shed with a bucket of feed and a rooster came out of what seemed like no where and attacked me. I was taken aback. I never expected that, but I made a plan of what I would do if he tried again. The very next morning it happened again and I kicked that sucker like a foot ball. If he died, I wouldn't care. He broke the cardinal rule around here about doing no harm to other farm mates, me included. A few days later he was there when I fed but he was an absolute gentlemen.
My current hen Chicken Chicken has adopted a new behavior now that she's laying an egg. When I walk up from behind her she "assumes the position". Apparently I've become the dominant rooster just as the dogs, cat and horse are her flock mates.
I went to the feed store for a couple hundred lbs of senior horse feed. I got a parsley plant, a Rosemary, and little Vidalia onion plants too. Then I went dumpster diving for cardboard. I can't actually dive but I picked up what I could reach. Then I broke them down and covered my vegetable garden with them.
