Potassium Permanganate dosage
Hello all,
I want to use PP (2ppm strength) for external parasites in my 80 gallons. I am going to go by weight. According to my calculations, I need to use 0.53 g of PP. I am calculating based on a volume of 70 gallon because my tank is not full and I have big pieces of driftwood in there. My question is: how much water do I need to dissolve my PP in? I am confused about that. Could not find that info anywhere....Also, can I mix PP with mineral water ? It's my first time using it.
Thanks a lot!
Sophie

That is the correct amount of PP for a 2ppm dose.
You can mix the PP with mineral water (but why?). I use recently boiled water and dissolve the PP in a jug or small bowl then add it to the tank. I use about half a pint of water.
It is likely that the treatment won't run for the recommended four hours minimum because the wood will "use" up the PP. It should remain purplish/pinkish for a full 4 hours.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply. I am trying to figure out the equivalent of a pint in US gallon. I was also trying to clean the wood out. I was going to use it for 2 hours.

Well in the UK there are 8 pints in a gallon, but our gallons are about 20% bigger than yours.... so basically a large cup (or mug) full of hot water to dissolve the crystals in will be fine.
You really need to treat for a minimum of 4 hours.

I make up a stock solution and keep it in a 1litre coke bottle. It is also usefull for steralizing nets and siphon tubes.

Hi Sophie,
Perhaps this may help
http://www.metric-conversion-tables....sionvolume.htm
Just to add some :
to calculate ppm
ppm = mg/liter
1g = 1000mg
1ppm = 1mg/1 liter of water
to calculate liter of water in tank
liter = long in cm x width(high) in cm x deep in cm / 1000
3.785L = 1gallan
to calculate %
1g/1 liter water = 0.1% (For salt add 100g into 100liter of water will equal to 0.1% dosage)
term :
ppm = part per million
To make it easy for potassium permanganate crystal form into pp solution.
1g (1000mg) pp for 100ml of water = 1000ppm
1ml of this pp water solution = 10ppm
To make it 5ppm dosage : add 10ml into 20Litre of tank water or 50ml to 100L of water.
Cheers
Francis:)
PS
Remember to have Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in hand too
Re: Potassium Permanganate dosage
Hi, thanks for all the info. Does the water have to be warm or can you use cold water?
Re: Potassium Permanganate dosage
Cold water should be fine but you will get a better dissolution of the PP in warmer water.
