Potassium Permanganate prevention
I have about 100 discus fry with a month from 4 different combinations of Discus. Live it in the Air! Very lucky!
I texted Gabe from Waty Discus Hugh Discus background. He does a prevention treatment on all his Fry. Using Potassium Permanganate. I was wondering everyones feelings on this. Thank you
Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
Hi Lewjo11, you will find most folks do not do that. It is best practice to clean the parents (if needed) prior to spawning. It is really easy to hurt fry with PP/meds etc. PP can burn the gills for example. If you decide to do this please consult Kenny of Kenny's Discus. His method is gentle on the fry.

Thank you for your input Pat!
Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
GVB discus is a member here and has some videos on youtube on his PP routine for fry.

How do you know your fry have flukes?
Generally you will save yourself a world of headaches if you treat the pairs and not the fry. PP does damage the gill filaments, and depending on how much exposure they get the effects can be very pronounced as the fry mature.
PP really should be a treatment of last resort on young growing fish...IMO.

Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
i'm a big believer in PP treatment because it kills so many parasites .
my question is : after neutralization with hydrogen peroxide , is there a residue left that could build up ?
it seems there is some brown colored stuff in my filter floss and om the walls of my sump.
i wonder if this could build up to something toxic ?
is there a person with some knowledge of chemistry that can answer this question ?
Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
Yes please I would like to know this also. I have been doing this to. My fry did find and stopped the 5 week death syndrome instantly. I do the treatment till the purple goes away and tank turns brown. Then and do a 90% water change. During treatment and just use filter with no media and aeration.
Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
Yes, would be nice to hear from some chem folks. When neutralized, where does it go? Do the new compounds off-gas, or become water and salts (my basic chemistry), etc. If it turned brown, is it "neutralized"?
Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
The brown buildup is probably Manganese dioxide:
3H2O2*+ 2KMnO4*→ 3O2*+ 2MnO2*+ 2KOH + 2H2O*
GHS Hazard Statements for MnO2:
H302: Harmful if swallowed [Warning*Acute toxicity, oral]
H332: Harmful if inhaled [Warning*Acute toxicity, inhalation]
I'm not 100% sure. Been a loooong time since my last chem lesson;)
Harmful probably if inhaled or swalliwed, but are used in filters:
Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is an inorganic compound. It is a black to brown-colored material that occurs naturally as the mineral pyrolusite. In addition to water treatment, MnO2 has many uses, including (but not limited to) the manufacture of batteries, beverage cans, agricultural pesticides and fungicides and electronic circuitry.1 The chemical reactions and physical processes of MnO2 media is a topic every water treatment specialist should understand and be competent in applying for groundwater applications in their region. Manganese dioxide technology is one of the most commonly used and least understood applications for removing iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, arsenic and radium. Read along and discover that MnO2 is not magic dust, but a very helpful catalyst used to improve water quality in applications from private wells to large municipalities.
Hope this helps a bit.
Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
Im not a chemist, actually my worst subject area but the brown left over after using Pp. its mostly manganese Di oxide and oxidized organic matter.. Its what potassium permanganate is made from commercially. This brown residue isnt something toxic in our tanks.. pp is used in water treatment and in many others areas.
Its a very strong oxidizer though as pp...and dangerous as one and though I probably shouldnt mention it , its also potentially very flammable. Survivalists and preppers carry it their bug out bags to sanitize water, wounds and as a fire starter when mixed with certain chemicals like glycerin.. check.out you tube for some vids ....quite impressive .

I have it in my back pack.. its a really useful chemical. But still.. last resort in a fish tank. Used wrong or too much and you will mess up the fishes gills..

ps chemists correct me if I am wrong.:)

Re: Potassium Permanganate prevention
From what I have gathered reading on this subject the residue from KmNo4 , the brown water is MnO2 and its harmless for fish and beneficial as Manganese addition for plants.
PP is commonly used in Koi pond culture to oxidize / kill algae, organics and pathogens and as an replacement for waterchange and they do not deactivate nor change water after the application , but just wait for the brown water to clear on its own .
