I have a new spawn today I'd like to support. The tds in the tank is at 90. I want to add a good dose of RO with a water change to lower the tds a bit, and not have to do it for a couple days. We're in the midst of a hot spell and my RO Brutes are outside. One that's been sitting full is at 90 degrees, the other at 78. The tank's at 86. If I'm changing 2/3 of the water, which would you choose?
I've had discus pair off and produce spawn at both 78F and 86F, Steve. So I don't think it matters very much. In your position, I'd go with the lower temperature.

I'd go for lower as well. The cooler water simulates the effect of a good rain.
The eggs were already there so I wasn't trying to stimulate spawning, just not kill the eggs with too large a temperature difference. I mixed from both barrels and got roughly the same temp as the tank. I guess the pair didn't like me messing with their water. The eggs were gone this morning. Darn!
I knew that you weren't trying to stimulate spawning. What I said is that the cooler water simulatesthe cooler temperature of the rain.
Yes, I got that Liz. I wasn't trying to argue with you, but since the eggs were already there I didn't think making it cooler really mattered anymore. It was a response to Willie's post too.
Not sure if it works this way with discus, but cooler water can throw some plecos for a loop if they already have a spawn. Makes them think it's time to get busy again, so they give the current spawn the boot.
