Tank set up suggestions on brands, where to buy
Greetings!
I am getting back into Discus after 20 years. Seems like a great time to jump back in. I saw a sticky post that here a few years ago that someone really too a lot of time describing filtration set ups, heating, lighting and recommendations on brands. I cannot find that post anymore.
I used to buy cheap good stuff off Pet Warehouse back in the day and it does not look like its running anymore. Used to love the Ebo-Jager heaters but it looks like they don't make them anymore.
I found an equipment thread that is not very easy to navigate through. Would someone be willing to make some recommendations on heaters, filters (external), lighting, are heater controllers worth it ?- and where to buy from.
Thanks in advance for the assist.

I think your choice of equipment is going to depend upon your choice in tank and your plans for it.
As far as canisters go eheim and fluval are the two you just commonly see use here.
As far as heaters go aqueon pro is a great choice.
Heater controller like an inkbird is highly recommended.
As far as lighting that is personal preference. The lighting is going to be enjoyed more by you than the fish

Welcome back! Pet Warehouse is now called DrsFosterSmith.com. Ebo-Jager heaters are now Eheim.

I like Aqueon Pro heaters and Aqueon in general. They took great care of us at last years NADA show.

Thanks Smallchange! Are the Ehiem-jager heaters any good? I read some bad reviews about them on this forum.

Wait for the PetCo $1/gallon sale?
Or if you don't want to wait or Petco does not have the size you want on the sale...here is what I just did.
1. 65 gallon aqueon...paid $120 at LFS just the tank, no top stand etc.
2. Drilled the tank and installed an EShoppe overflow. The kit comes with everything-hole saw, bulkheads, template,..$120
3. Bought a 40 gallon breeder on Petco $1/gallon sale for a sump $40.
4. 1/4 glass cut to size, finished edges, for baffles in the sump...$80
5. Return pump $125
6. 2x Aqueon Pro 200w heaters $65
7. 2x Petzilla temperature controllers $30
7. Menard's 4ft LED shop light $35
OUCH,,,maybe I should not have made that list!!
