Joe, the beauty of fishing is that the event can be a family affair. When I was young my grand dad and my dad took me fishing. Always for trout or salmon. My dad's last trip I got to treat. We flew from Washington to BC for a 4 day over night guided trip. On that trip dad caught his last and largest salmon of his life. I was the largest of the week for that resort as well and he got a prize for it. I no longer fish as my son has been tied up in college...for the past 10 years. I have no one to go with. The largest I have caught to date is 10 foot sailfish which was stuffed and now hangs on my wall. Fishing to me is something more than just catching dinner. Thanks, Joe. Keep on fishing, lad.
She sure does...Never a problem getting her up early in the morning. The best part is that she asks me to take her. :)
I love my fishing. Not for the fish, but the places it takes me and the people i meet. I was very lucky to be introduced to fishing, and hunting, by my dad when i was a child, and in turn i took him on some good trips like you did with your dad. I bet they are some of your fondest memories with him.
I have introduced my kids, and now its my grand kids turn. I hope that they enjoy it and have good memories of me when im gone....the cycle of life.
Where did you catch your sailfish? Hope it played up for you. Would love to see any fishing pics you may have.
I caught my first Sailfish in Townsville Queensland here in Australia, but caught a bunch of them in Panama

I caught the sail near Acapulco. The rod seemed to have the girth of a rake handle. It was a battle to be sure. My arm muscles wore out.
I hear you! Those heavy rods take a toll. We use them in Cairns when targeting Grander Black Marlin. The softer rods are much easier to work with.
I have been enjoying all types of fishing recently.
One of the benefits from being a member of a club is the diversity of knowledge that is available for the taking. I recently learnt that not too far away from where i usually go to catch my snapper, that there's a deeper area that hold gummy sharks. Gummy shark is what is sold as 'flake' here at our fish and chip shops and is very tasty.
The first time i went to try this spot out l ended up catching eight gummy sharks. Most were only pups and where released, but i did manage two keepers which i kept for a feed. We have size and bag limits here on most species which is a good thing.

I hadn't been fresh water fishing for awhile and heard that our fisheries department had release tons of breeding stock in the Goulburn River, which is about an hours drive from my house. I went with my daughter's partner and ended up camping along side the river for the weekend. We did score a few, but none of the large breeding stock models...in fact i caught the smallest rainbow trout that i've ever seen.

Another species that i've been targeting lately is the humble whiting. Don't let their size fool you...pound for pound they're are a good fighting fish which pull some drag on the lighter more finesse gear that is used for them. They're also real good eating too

...and just recently...a group from my fishing club wanted to go on a marlin fishing trip. I suggested we go to Bermagui, as this was the place i first went to catch my first marlin 22 years ago. The continental shelf comes within 12 miles of the coast, which makes it safe and accessible in the smaller boats. I hadn't been to Bermagui in over 12 years, but i really didnt notice much changes there.

I fished with my friend Troy and his partner Leaha, who had marlin way up on her bucket list. Ive caught a fair few different species of bill fish and now really enjoy watch people capture their first.
Her fish weighed only 54kg, which made it a good specimen to keep for a feed. we harvested it and shared it amongst other members of our club to enjoy.
There is no size limit on marlin here and you are allowed to keep one of the combined species per day, which i think is excessive. This one marlin could feed a few families for a week if you chose to eat fish every day.

I also put a short video clip together for Troy and Leaha from the trip.

Yes, i do love my fishing and enjoy eating fresh fish when i can catch it, but release lots more than i actually keep to enjoy for another day, when i want to eat it fresh.
Has anyone else been doing any fishing lately?
I used to love fishing when I was young, looks like you will have good and fresh sashimi.
What type of fishing did you do when you were younger Joyce?
Its funny you ask about sashimi. I just spent four days at Portland chasing Southern Bluefin tuna. We were hoping for a barrel which is a term we use for tuna over 100kg, but we settled for these smaller 10kg models which are actually nicer on the plate and the best part near the head for fresh sashimi right there on the boat, as we carry what we need to enjoy it fresh.

We even hooked up an Albatros which took a dive on one of our tuna lures and got caught up. We were able to release it unharmed. I've always been in awe of the largest sea bird and got to sea how big they actually are while releasing it.
Feel free to share your fishing pictures on here...i'd love to see them
Just got back to Ohio after spending 18 days in Australia on Nth Stradbroke Island. The weather was incredible and we got to do a bit of fishing. Had a blast with my boys. We never post their faces on public sites so plz excuse the blackout, lol. Bait fish, shark, some pinkies, a yellow emperor and more. Good times!Attachment 124115

I miss home like a crazy man...
Nice haul and video Dan...Thanks for Sharing...and that shark was only a pup mate....take a spoon full of cement and 'Harden Up' ;)
Lol, yea I know mate,Haha. There was 2 in the bait actually. My 11 yr old son and I were gleefully diving into the bait patch for a while after fishing it, drove down the beach to pick up my wife, came back for another dip in the bait patch to find 2 bronzies chowing down. Fun times!!

Muskie i caught in Canada last week Attachment 124493Attachment 124494
Wow! Another nice Muskie Matt! Well done!
On the surface again with that top water bait topper stopper?
The weather here at home has been miserable the last couple of months, but i was lucky enough to do an overseas trip to L.A.
A good friend of mine that lives near Newport Beach took me out on his boat a few times.
I manages to tick another target species off my bucket list being a Thresher Shark on a deep diving Halco Lure, and another i had never known of being a Calalco bass or Kelp Bass? We caught over a hundred on little live sardines...all released to swim another day. Another memorable catch on the live bait was a nice Yellow tail.

Yes I acually did catch this fish with the exact same bait as last year the topper stopper was up in Canada for two weeks. fishing was very slow because it was so hot up there for the most part. but paid off with this fish i caught. i caught her at the end of the trip but looks like you also had a nice trip thats a good looking shark you caught there how long did that take you to catch?
Good work Matt and Joe...it's a labor of love hey...nice thresher Joe...are they an edible of catch & release species? They lurk about in the southern Aussie waters don't they? Very cool looking shark. Well done mate!
