Barclaya longifolia - this plant will flower underwater (and self fertilize) even if the flowers don't reach the surface of the water. Although some people report that it sometimes goes into a dormant state, that's not happened to me yet (knock on wood!).

Will tiger lotus work in a discus tank? I had great success with giant valisneria growing in my discus tank
Thanks for the suggestions, some of them I already knew about but others I didn't :D

I've kept those before with discus - there's one on the right hand side of this photo. I no longer have that plant though.

Obviously all those plants ain't 'gonna grow in sand so...what substrate are you employing ?
thanks
Re: These plants have worked for me in a discus tank... (photos)
Hassles,
All of those plants will grow in sand as long as it's not so fine that it suffocates the roots. Any of the commercially available plant substrates will work well in a pot if you're looking to do that.

Phil

G'day Phil
Thanks for the response - greatly appreciated.
I am assuming then that some form or fertilisation (root) tab is to be employed rather than the addition of ferts into the water column if sand is to be used ?
take care & please survive the silly season
Re: These plants have worked for me in a discus tank... (photos)
Hassles,
Yes, you'll probably want to add some sort of fertiliser tab to the pots if you go that route. If you decide to put substrate down throughout the aquarium all you'll really need to do is use light appropriate for the amount of nutrients and fish derived CO2 and let them grow slowly.

Phil

Hi Walter
I am new to SimplyDiscus and have never posted or replied or communicated with anyone. I have just endlessly logged on to read and learn.
What temperature do you maintain your discus tank at while having success with the plants you have listed?
Thanks
Steve
I was told that there aren't many plants that one can use in a discus only tank due to the high temperature required to keep discus successfully.
And, that the few plants you can use will not survive at the 86 to 88 degrees that I am planning to run my discus only tank at.
I was told that I would have to compromise and run the tank at 82 degrees, 84 degrees maximum.
Please advise

I have kept these plants at 84-86ºF.
Hope that helps,
Walter
