I wish they had this when I was in school
My Sons an avid fencer and has been taking lessons several years, when he got into HIgh school last year he naturally joined the fencing team. Fencing Team? Gee I wish they had it when I went there. Its such a cool sport to watch. One on one with "swords" I mean Foils :) . I started taking pictures for the team then too as a volunteer. The school hires a guy to take some the official Pics at some sporting events, I fill in the gaps and give the coach what ever I shoot. I try and capture all the kids at one point or another. Its very challenging as the light is pretty poor, my lens is not ideal, and these kids really move fast. I don't use flash which would distract them. It takes hundreds of shots to get a handful of really good ones, I shoot in burst mode which helps but still.. its tough.
A few of my favorite athlete on the team.

Those are really cool Al. I would have loved to have taken fencing as a kid too. What's the tether for? Keep a certain distance between the kids?

Pat it carries the electric to the foil. The Vests they wear are conductive. When a foil hits one it registers as a hit, and the ref makes a call , not all hits are points . They make some cool wireless systems now but they are very pricey. Our towns fencing team is very small and honestly not funded well compared to Football, baseball or basket ball but the kids really love this sport. Ethan hopes to continue this on in College in a few years. Hes pretty good at it too.

We never had fencing offered either. It looks like it would be challenging and great fun. Does Ethan know the line from The Princess Bride? That’s the first thing I think of whenever I see swords or fencing. “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

That was a great movie. I still laugh when I think of the scene when Andre the giant keeps rhyming everything he says and the other guy yells, “Stop that rhyming and I mean it!” (Long pause) “Anybody want a peanut?” Lol

One of my all time favorite movies.I even have a copy. I love the part where they are cerebrally dueling over the poison. But then again the part where Wesley is paralized from the neck down is hillarious.

I did this as an adult... back when my legs and back were a 15 years younger... It was a blast! You might think it's not very "valid" from a real fighting perspective, but trust me, you learn a ton about timing, distance, reach, feinting etc... It is a VERY cool thing. Wish I had the time for it again, although now, my reflexes are so much slower I'd get slaughtered...
