Sad to say this was my first discus. I purchased him at an LFS at about quarter to half dollar size. I thought he was the coolest fish I've ever owned. Sadly I received no info on care of discus when I purchased it. I lost it after about a year. I had no clue how badly he looked until I started educating myself on discus here after losing it. Sad to think he prob lived a very unhappy life in improper conditions. It's unfortunate when newbies buy these fish with out a clue what they need.
This also is a thank you to all the members here that help newbies like myself to educate themselves and gain the confidence that discus keeping can be done with the proper knowledge.
I now have 7 beautiful healthy fish and feel great about it.

I can't believe this thread is still alive lol
Every year, I participate in organizing our local club fish competition. The major reason I do so is to pitch for a class that I term "Freezer Specials". The entries do not necessarily have to be alive. I also offer to sponsor the class and pay for the trophy so that it's pure profit for the club. Every year, more "reasonable" opinions prevail.
Maybe it's time we just do one for discus, Willie
2015-11-17 21.10.jpg Super Pepper! Bred from a Red Turq. father and Red Mellon mother. The genetics on this spawn were ALL over the place. This one started out OK, F24.jpg then got progressively worse, and in IMHO uglier, though not all peppered fish are necessarily bad.
