What are some good pellets and flakes?
Hello, and welcome to Simply Discus Sanjay well I would get a small group like five or seven from the same source from 3" to 4" you cant start with a minimum 55g tank and keep it simple bare bottom is best to start with until you get the hang of your water changes. Get a good test kit (check the date and make sure its not outdated) and test your water daily until your parameters are consistent and under control after that I would recommend testing before every water change. I would recommend daily water changes until your discus are full grown, how you can safely do water changes is get a storage barrel (like a 55g Brute plastic garbage can) and age your water with an air stone for aeration and a heater to bring the water to the same temperature. I would age the water no less than 24 hours and keep constant aeration going in the storage tank to stabilize your PH and not have PH swings in your tank. I would do as many water changes as you can in a week Discus need clean fresh water and lots of it. I would start off with the temperature between 82-84 degrees and don't go higher until you get feeding and cleaning down pat, you don't want bad bacterial blooms. Keep the filtration simple like a sponge filter or a Aqua clear and simple lights are the best. Have fun and just learn on the Forum and read as much as you can......Hope this helps.......Josie
Growth rate is dependent on age, food and environmental conditions. Discus will generally grow at a faster rate in their younger stages of development (0-5 months) After that, the growth rate will slow down but stay steady until about 18-24 months. Some fish will continue to get thicker even past 2 years.
