    Default Roseline/torpedo barbs with discus?

    Hi everyone,
I was in petsmart buying food for the guinea pigs, and decided to walk through the fish section. There were suprisingly some fish I would consider buying, in decent condition. Then I saw a tank full of Roseline barbs (Puntius denisonii). These fish were in good condition and were selling for $10 a pop! The cheapest I have ever seen them until now was $40 each. Are these fish compatible with discus?

absolutely, they are very hardy and can tolerate low-high temps. many people keep them with discus and angels. $10 is about the right amount u should be paying. since they are available everywhere nowadays. i would never pay more then $10 unless its a bigger one or if its wild caught then id pay more.

Ive been advised not to get one. Not the best tankmates for discus.

Some discus-keepers successfully keep Roselines with Discus.
However, they are very active, fast-swimming fish and when they get larger, they MAY tend to startle discus & perhaps stress them. May not occur often, but it does in some cases, so one does need to keep an eye on them.
Edit: I believe it depends largely on the size of the Roselines vs. the size of the Discus, the numbers of each species, the size of the tank, and the overall bio-load.

Im more worried they will steal away from discus. Paul does this happen a lot?
I feed my discus in feeder cones only

Yes, it is possible they could out-compete the discus for food, particularly as they get larger and bolder.

Sorry to be at odds with others here but imo/e these are not a suitable tank mate for discus. Their requirements are somewhat different to the discus requirements not least in termperature. Whilst they will "live" at discus temps they won't thrive and will quickly succumb. I'd avoid them or setup a tank just for these.

I have a few adult ones with Discus and they are fine together. The Roseline Barbs just keep to themselves while the Discus just pay no attention to them. I do wonder if the temp being high shorter life span for Roseline Barbs.

I think the bigger issue is the OP wants to buy fish from Petsmart with the intention of putting them in his discus tank.

No aquatic creatures were harmed in the creation of this signature, although a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Denison barbs are beautiful but IMO I would choose not to put them in with discus unless you had them all together young...
