Second Try at Breeding

So my Piwow Pair laid eggs a second time on Saturday evening. The first time they guarded the eggs till the third day before eating them all once the eggs all turn white. Since Saturday they have been glue to the cone switching back and forth. Today I came home and they ate all the white eggs except these that look black (I put a cone screen on the remaining eggs). Does these black one mean they are fertilize eggs? My water is too hard to get a good hatch rate so I'll need to invest in getting an RO setup to probably see real results. Let me know what you guys think.

Yes the dark ones are fertile eggs. When I had my hatchery in Chicago, the only spawns that would be fertile, were from my German strain fish...lower fertility in the hard water naturally. You will see better hatch rates once you employ RO...Bill

Thanks Bill. So now at least I know I have a confirm pair I will look into getting an RO to help with the hatch rates. Since I'm on Chicago water I will do 50/50 tap to RO ratio.

Thanks Pat... My first confirmed pair ever... Although the male isn't the one I want to bread with this female at least I know he's confirmed. I will let them go full time breading once I get an RO unit. Cannot wait to try again... Need to also setup my BBS hatchery...

Exciting times here bill... Even though it's only four fertilize eggs I hope they make it to wiggly stage just so the parents gets experience at it... I don't expect much from this until I setup some RO. Bill can you PM me the TDS device name that you use to measure the water? I will probably get one to help determine the TDS.
