It usally takes me 2-3 days to bring up the water level, then its 50%,or until the parents fins break water for 2-3 weeks.Twice a day bbs, just a s**tload each time.

Although twice a day BBs in ideal remember that they have the parents to feed off of and the days that your not working you can feed more times a day. when you do your two feedings of brine shrimp don't put to much in because brine shrimp can really foul a tank up if not eaten.....Josie

Remember to wipe down the tank especially the bottom, when doing the waterchange.

I not quite sure how to quantify sh*tload, but it sounds like it maybe too much. Fouled filters from bbs are the number one reason for losing fry early in the game. Don't get caught up on the "how fast can I make them grow" idea, but rather concentrate on how clean can you keep the water.

Thanks guys for helping to clear things up I will focus on that on the next spawn... As of last night my male ate all the 25 remaining fry. They were growing well too (Ashamed, but at this point I'm not as disappointed as before). I can only assume he ate the fry as he couldn't get a break from the constant feeding from the aggressive fry and gave up on the spawn. Without the female it seems like it was too much for this young male to handle on it's own. He wasn't eating during the period he had the fry attached, but once he eat them all he's back to his old self. This morning I put the female back into the breeding tank with him again. I'm just going to let this pair do it's thing from now on until they get it right together. This thread will go on sleep mode until I have good news to report... lol Thanks everyone for helping me. I've learned so much from everyone that has posted and message with me via PM. This site has truly open my eyes on how hard it is to breed and how rewarding it can be when the breeding is a success.

m\Maybe s**tload was a little vague, lol. To clear up,followed John N's advice on heavy feeding in the morning and night, skipped all the trying to feed them during the day, having wife/son dump in pre-measured portions.

    • Tank for breeding is 20 gallon high (Most use 29 gallon)
    • Filtration is just sponge filter with air line
    • temp for breeding is set to 85 degree
    • Grow-outs always starts in a 29 gallon until they reach 4" before moving them to my 75 gallon grow-out tank.

Noticed the same as well, parents eats no or very sparing food during the time of wriggler to fry. And they looked very stressed on their 4day of attachment. Not sure whether to turn on the lights all the time, since the fry's lost its attachment whenever i turn-off the light, so i turned-on the light all the time, probably that gave no rest to parents. Back on track, and lets see how my coming batch goes on..

UPDATE: Still no success with the pair raising their fry by themself. The female continues to eat them once they go free swimming or some at wriggler stage. Because of this reason I've stared to raise the fry myself. See my My first attempt at Artificial rearing thread.

Anyone know if the female will ever stop eating the fry at some point and actually do her job and raise her fry? I may need to look into getting another proven experience pair to foster these fry.
