Thread: Vegetables for Discus

    Default Vegetables for Discus

How important is vegetation in a discus diet? Do the pros here add any type of vegetation to their discus food? What kind? How often? What are good options?

Hello Oc Discus.I do not know of other discusfanatics have the same experience but here they really like the seeds out of a cucumbre. When I put a piece sliced in my tank they start to fight for it and all wanna eat the seeds of it.In the beginning my plecos cannot come close to the cucumbre.

Thank you. I think I saw a piece in your recent photo post- about #6. How often do you feed it?

    Hey oc discus
I've used spinach in my beef heart mix and every batch after that. I'm going to make a new batch and this time I'm going to try collard greens. I got the idea of collard greens from a recipe that Josie from Chicago discus posted. If you want, I can provide you with the link?

    The Xingús will eat:
    watermelon
    apricot
    mulberries
    raspberries
    very sweet orange flesh
    very ripe plum flesh
and the green algae I srape off of the insides of the tank. I always let them eat as much of it as they like before I vaccum the rest.

    The Xingús will not eat:
    spinach
    bananas
    pineapple
    strawberries
    cherries
and those I can't remember just now.

I don't prepare food mixes any longer so I try to keep my fish on a varied diet which -according to what I've read about wilds in general and what I've experienced in my own tank- I think should include some sort of greenery. I often see them graze on the branch that's closest to the neon tube and is covered with a thin film of beautifully green algae.

I guess this question of feeding or not feeding green stuff to our wilds is purely philosophical as many seem to be keeping them on a low-green diet and the fish are just fine. It is not something to have a debate about, but sharing experiences is definately a good thing to do. Mine are very different from the average I see above but I have no reason to question experiences different to mine.

Thanks for the veggie tales. I guess the beef heart mix is fed daily. How often are the pure veggies fed?

On a serious note I do use either collard or mustard green in my BH mix so they get some greens everyday
