    Default Plumbing is Complete!

    Hello friends,

Yesterday with the help of a friend we were able to get all the main tanks hard plumbed in. All the plumbing is 3/4" (ID) PVC. Since I do not have drilled tanks I ran a piece of pvc into the tanks with a strainer attachment on the ends. We ran each one up and out of the tank and connected with shut off valves. Thanks to Mike B and Bud for their support.

Here is were we started, on the breeding tanks.

As you can see in the picture we also included PVC unions in case I need to work or re-arrange certain sections without tearing it all apart.

    Behind the big tanks.

    And the pump connections.

    And to the floor drain.

I decided to go with the smaller pump since all it is really doing is starting the gravity flow. I started testing the setup by draining one of my 20 gal tanks. It drained 15 gallons in under 3 minutes. I then started draining my 90 gal tank and I was able to drain 50% in less than 10 minutes.

    Thanks for looking.

Perfect solution to non drill tank... I have the same setup as well... I use 1" PVC instead of 3/4. Works perfectly...

I went with the 3/4" because on the breeder tanks, I wanted to glass tops to close, with 1" I would not have been able to do that (don't want any jumpers, especially from a pair). The flow rate is really good.

Looking great! How long does it take to do a water change for your whole system?

Looks good Jeff. I recently built a similar setup. The red valves, did you happen to get those at Home Depot? Are they difficult to open and close. All the solid red ones I purchased were really tough to open and close and it would scare the fish. I found at a different HD store ones that are red handled but with a white center circle that are a lot easier to open. Just thought I would spread the word. Good work tho!!!!

Looking good and ready for couple pairs. Just curious, how do you change water without sucking fry and do you vacuum the bottom? Thank you for sharing Jeff

    Great job Jeff!
I know when I finished plumbing my reef tank, being my first plumbing job, it was a huge feeling of accomplishment. never forget how nerve wracking it was doing the first leak test. Besides quality fish automating water changes to any degree is in my opinion one of the best things anyone with multiple tanks can invest in. I use the same style of PVC over the top of the tank for my refilling hose from my barrel.
Did you have to prime the line for the pump the first time due to there being no water in the line or ? Sorry I have just never used an external pump like that before. I just employ a fleet of maxi-jet 1200s and a couple 900s for water changes.
