Default Why bare bottom tanks are better for discus

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well here is a picture of the mess 5 of my discus managed to make in one day. Ridiculous how much poop was in the tank. There is more is the corners behind the sponge filters. Took about 2 minutes to vacuum. IMO there's No way you could get all that poop in a tank with a 3-5 inch deep gravel bed...

I agree with Discusdude. All five of my tanks are BB and yes, with frequent feeding your get frequent poop and I cannot imagine ever being able to clean all that up with a substrate and planted tank.

Sure, BB tanks are easier to clean and subsequently better for water quality. This goes for all fish, not just for discus. But to keep healthy discus, you don't have to clean up every drop of discus poop from the tank.

Poop organic waste, breaks down becomes fertilizer for plants. no little turds laying in on substrate.

I agree discus dude, it seems I am alway cleaning a tank. the worst is when you are finally done cleaning them out and each tank is spotless and then another one poops again...lol.
