Default Glass tops: can you make them

Wondering if you can make/buy glass tops at homedepot or something?
If so what will I need to make it with? It's for a 120 gallon tank (48X24) with center brace
    Thanks

I've used plate glass before that i had cut at a glass company. You can use any glass as a top, but it should be thicker than your average replacement window glass. .. You can also use clear acrylic and cut that but is needs to be pretty thick or it will warp from the heat... sometimes its just easier and cheaper to order a replacement glass.. Drsfostersmith.com sells alot of them...might want to check there. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/fish-supplies/pr/c/3578

I have used plexie glass it the past, you have to get it very thick other wise it will warp. I now use egg crate on some of my tanks now, it works well and is cheep.

The last time I had a glazier cut me a couple of pieces of glass for a breeder tank top it cost me $7 or $8. It just really depends how much a glass shop wants for their work.

I'd suggest looking for an independently owned glass shop rather than somewhere like Lowe's or Home Depot. The big box stores can be hit or miss when it comes to stuff like that. Custom framing places may even have the ability to do that if they cut their own glass for custom frames.

Personally I just buy them online because I've never found anyone local to work with glass and the quality of the Aqueon brand ones are always pretty good. I've had mine for years and they're fine -- if they get dirty I spray them down with vinegar and scrape them with a razor blade and they look brand new.

You're right Ryan, my glass supplier is definitely a mom and pop place.

Just want to add -- If you do go to a glass shop to get them made, make sure you get them to smooth/grind the edges.

Thanks all for the responses. Since there is a center brace, will I have to get two seperate tops made?: one for each side of the top that the brace divides?
