Hi guys, I had to clean my canister filter and next day I tested nitrates and there was a big rise to 50 mg/l anyway I did a 75% water change and the next day a 50% wc and all water parameters seem to be in order.
NO3 - 10 mg/l
NO2 - 0
NH3 - 0
PH - 7
TEMP - 29 celcius
Well my problem is one of my larger discus fish has fallen sick! He is a lot darker than usual and also has some white spots on body and a half rotted side fin which he does not use any more! I would like to know how I can help this guy.
I will post a few pictures.
Thanks in advance!

Can you fill out the questionnaire, neither of those fish look very well. What is the time frame for the above symptoms.

Fungus is generally not a problem... bacteria or parasites are typically the root cause. When an external fungus is present, its opportunistic feeding on the tissue damaged by something else.
I'm guessing that larger discus has been clamping its fins to its sides? Theres probably a patch of whitish area as well where the fins lay against the side of the body?
Please fill out the questionaire as it will help us.

Problem
1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?
One of the biggest discus has white spots and fin rot on side fin and has gone dark! Noticed day after deep cleaning cannister filter
2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).
White fungus?? side fin rotting away
3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.
Dosed with sera omnipur 13ml once treatment lasts 7 days but saw things getting worse so I have done 60% WC and put carbon in filter
Tank/Water
4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
250 liters with new 4 month old filter packed with last filter media & more as is bigger, 2 x 9cm, 2 x 7cm and 6 x 4/5cm discus and small group of corys, neons and killis.
5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).
50% twice a week sometimes 3 depending on nitrates above 10 mg/l I always do WC
6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?
running for 10 in total but moved house 4 years ago so it had a good scrub down and start fresh if you like! Sand base 3cm max
7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.
No, straight from tap, conditioned with seachem prime and mixed 40% with 60% RO
8. Parameters and water source;
Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.
- temp _30 celcius____
- ph __7___
- ammonia reading ___0_
- nitrite reading ___0_
- nitrate reading __10 mg/l__
What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.
- well water ____
- municipal water _40___
- RO water __60__
9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.
3 new juvenile discus
10. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.
yes one fin has been clamped since the nitrates spike and now the white stuff!
I was thinking of treating with sera bactopur as I can see some small whitish marks developing on the smaller discus and the other big one in photo has started to clamp one fin, thanks for any input
Ok so I have a few questions...
1) You said you used filter media from another filter? Was if from the same tank or another tank?
2) You added some juvi's, did you QT them? How long from the time you introduced them till this break out?
Dont think this just happened that quickly after you cleaned the canister. I am thinking if nitrates had gotten high for sometime then it affected the health of this one. Any other fish showing these signs? What is the discus above the sick one in post #4?
[I]You can't get lost if you don't know where your going...................
Looks like a case of PTS to me.

Hi there thanks for trying to help me!
1) yes from same tank just upgraded to 2000l/h canister filter and I have added extra filter media and still more room!!
2) yes added some juves, they were supposed to arrive a few weeks ago but did not turn up but I am sure that the problem did not come from them as it was just before they arrived I saw the symptoms on the big one
I am a bit shocked as well as I always check for nitrates every couple of days and most the time I get a reading of 10 mg/l but after I did the filter canister clean, rinsing in aquarium water in a bucket etc as I normally do with no problems, the next day I noticed a big rise in nitrates, 50 mg/l!!
sorry to sound stupid but what is PTS
