    Default Kaldnes K1, or K3,

I'm working on the sump plan for the 240g and looking at Kaldnes.

With a 75 gallon sump and assuming I need between 40 liters (10g) and 50 liters (13g) of K media, is there any disadvantage to going with the K3 on a larger sump set-up?

    K1 - K3 side by side

    I can'f find any images of K-2 but I think it is like the K-3 minus the outer ring. K-1 = 1 ring; K-2 = 2 rings; and K-3 = 3 rings.

I think k3 is mainly for ponds I'm sure I would work. But I think it was just made for larger bodies of water

I thought so as well then I came across this. I have not been able to find anyone who sells it so it is either a knock off or discontinued.

It is definitely marketed heavily for Koi ponds. There is not much difference in cost between K1 and K3 so I am pondering the idea. I just wish I could find someone with first hand experience with K3. Would it be a better choice for 300 gallons total volume or is it overkill beyond measure? I'm of the mindset you can never over-filter. My concern is the larger size of the K3 and if it would bind up and not produce the circulation needed for a proper moving bed filter.

The smaller media will have more surface area per bulk volume of media.

Greg, I have talked to some pond keeper years ago that used K3. They used a 55 gallon drum about half to three quaters full of media and a big pond pump just to turn the media. This was used to filter a 2000 gallon pond.

Thanks Wes - looking like K1 is the right choice.

You won't go wrong with k1. It has more surface area than k3. I was thinking about using k3 in my sump but I went with k1 instead. I'm using about 48 litters in a 80 gallon sump

please be sure to update us on how it is being used with the sump.

I ended up making a screen of layered egg crate to prevent the k1 from moving into other sump chambers, hoping the flow from my tank drains, and a large airstone will be enough to spin the two gallons worth of k1 I have.
