Are you sure this is a standard sized 55g? It does not look very long which is typical for the standard 55g (48")
Hey everyone! I'm working on setting up my first planted tank and want to finally be able to have some discus fish to stock in it. I've done a lot of research and I can't wait to see what I can put together I'm from Grand Rapids MI.
here is a pic of my tank in the process of being built. I've been working on aquascaping it and I am just waiting on the lighting to come in before I purchase the plants and begin to cycle the tank. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! It's a standard 55 gal tank.

Looks like a 40 breeder. Would like to see you take a tape measure to it and post the dimensions.
But seriously. Your first planted tank, as well as your first time keeping discus? You need to reconsider this, choose one or the other, don't do both at the same time. It's a recipe for disaster.

I know that's disappointing to hear but it's sooooo right on! Do a few months planted then put a pair of adults in there only or get a bare grow out for juvies, you won't have good success with a new planted tank I promise it will go badly for sure

I adjusted the image size to better fit the forum and it warped the dimensions a little bit, it's a 48x21x13. As for planted and discus I understand the concern. I was actually thinking of getting the planted tank established before ever adding discus. So I would be a few months out yet. I was thinking of starting with some shrimp snails and tetras to stock it initially.
I will do that then are shrimp and snails still ok as a cleaning crew?

Makes sense, plants alone it is then! Thanks! Here is a list of the plants I was hoping to use, Sagittaria subulata, Anubias barteri 'Petite', Anubias Lanceolata, Echinodorus amazonicus, and Hemianthus Callitrichoides 'cuba'
Haha gotcha, well I've double checked all of their water requirements against optimum discus water and they all should work.
One thing to consider

I don't sell young discus to people with planted tanks lol

If you don't mind me asking, Is it just because you don't think they will be taken care of with planted? (Just curious) I've read mixed opinions but people seem to think as long as there is enough cover and strict water changes and feeding that discus can still grow close to their full size. What are your thoughts?
LOL, you asked........

My feelings are pretty well laid out in that thread.
