Very cool. When I was a child my grandmother kept chickens. There was nothing better than going out in the morning and picking fresh warm brown eggs for breakfast.
I also raised a chick from an egg that the mother hand abandoned. At we point we had grown so close I would bring her in the house with me and she would sit on the couch and watch tv with me.

Girls are not happy today... for half the flock this their first winter... The browns, Buckeyes, are well suited for the winter with their short combs, but still.. 6 F is a bit chilly when you have never felt it before!

Keep those old hens for making stock, they're like jerky when they get older. My friends have some of the rolling enclosures that they move each day so the chickens get new grass & bugs each day, and they don't have a messy coup to clean. They don't feed any grain, and the yolks are super dark yellow. Great eggs!

I let my girls out in a fenced in area of the yard that has grass, and they have the pen they are in in the pics that they have pretty much turned into a pavement! I also have a garden that I grow greens for them..They go nuts for the collard greens, and Kale. This time of year its tougher... table scraps help.
Nothing better than a Fresh egg for breakfast!

The different colors make for a very pretty mix! How 'bout loading up the chicken manure and dumping it on my garden? I still have the Egyptian onions you gave me. They're the first thing up in the spring and the last thing to die down in the fall. I'd love to have chickens but my dogs would take the squeaker out of them. I get my eggs across the street though but it's not quite the same...

I have been wanting chickens for years. I started planning proper fencing last night after talking on another fish forum about chickens. Weird, huh? I figured out how I can fence to keep my 3 untrustworthy dogs out and the chickens in. I'll be getting these. I had them when I lived in Mobile. They're large gentle chickens and IMO they're very beautiful. https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/light_brahmas.html
