Definitely Al. Remember you are getting late in the year. I would almost be tempted to get the chicks and they will be ready to lay in the spring and good sized for this coming winter.

I can get them as Eggs if I drive 5 hours or chicks in a few weeks.. but I am patient but not 7 months patient as far as getting eggs. The more I study this situation the more Discus Parallels I see! LOL!!!
I often tell people to be patient with their discus...I should probably take my own advice huh?

Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
I have to admit, those are some nice looking birds Al. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures etc of the continuing saga, haven't been this interested in a bird story since someone spun a yarn about her crow.

I've had chickens a few times. Last summer before I sold the shop I had thrn in the back. Buff Orpington, silky, and buckeye. I was selling chicken feed at the shop so figured I'd collect the chickens also.years ago we raised rhode is
And red sex link chicks. My daughter did her girl guide poultry badge with day old chicks then we kept a few. Love chickens. Vancouver can have urban chickens .
How about ordering online, like discus. Can you find a really good breeder and order some good stock?
I wish I lived where chickens are allowed
Thats what I did the first two sets of chickens I had, and it was fine. This time around I was hoping to get some local Hens of egg laying age. My have to go the chick route again. I have had some additional contact with a seller of those Barnvelders and I am exploring that route there. Means I have to be patient (yeah right) but It may be very worthwhile in the end.

Well Hopefully latter today I will have some Hens...I ran an ad in the local craigslist and someone contacted me that they have Rhode Island Reds about 1 1/2 years old. They are getting out of the Hobby. My first Chickens were a sex linked Rhode Island Red Cross..and they were extremely good hens, hardy and great layers...so I am hopeful with these.
I've also been in touch with a breeder of the "barnevelders" that I really want to get, and am on their egg List.... My kids are in 4H and my wife's the 4 H leader so we plan on getting some fertile eggs when available and the kids will use them as a project...then they'll replace any aging Rhode Island Hens.
Thats the plan at least.

The Journey has begun...I have my Rhode Island Red Hens, package deal/steal.. 8 hens @ 1 1/2 years old...$8 each. I really only wanted 4-5 but not something to pass up. They are pretty healthy, well taken care , but were not free ranged and show some signs of a few being the picked on ( Gee...just like Discus! They will enjoy the free ranging here once they settle in. I also need to do some picking and Choosing as I really only need 5, that will be after I have a chance to watch them a bit.
I'm pretty sure they are the standard sex linked crosses, plain looking but great layers.. Ironic...I started with this line years ago ,and here I am again with them.
kinda cool having chickens again...looking forward to eggs for breakfast tomorrow.
