Thread: Journal for my 90 gallon NPT

  1. #1

Default Journal for my 90 gallon NPT

This is my photo journal for my 90 gallon. Previously it was set up using 100% clay at the bottom with black "sand" to top it off. Unfortunately, when my ex set up the tank he put way to much clay and very little sand. This made it very susceptible to dangerous ammonia spikes, as well as pH changes. One evening this became evident by the accidental death of 4 of my discus.
My boyfriend rearranged the plants less than an hour after a major water change, and neglected to remove all of the substrate that clouded the water column. When I re ordered my replacements I decided to overhaul the entire tank.
I used the preexisting substrate and made a mixture of 30% clay and 70% sand; I used a much smaller amount than my boyfriend used on the tank previously, and I capped it with sand from home depot. I also culled 80% of the snails.

    Pictured before the overhaul.

    Tank just filled up.

Tank 12 hours after setting up.

Tank 3 weeks after overhaul with new fish.

Thanks! I agree with you on the trimming; I actually trimmed that area today during the water change.

This is what it looks like currently.

Great looking tank and fish, love the contrast in colors. And I kind of like the window behind the tank, it doesn't cause my eye to stop at the back wall with the light coming through.

Thanks ya'll, I also had to add some assassin snails to keep the trumpets snails in check.

I woke up this morning to eggs on the glass. I am going to go pick up a divider to see if I can't keep them alive and separate from the other fish.

oh wow thats awesome !!! yeah looks really popping, now you trimmed it, bought all the potential right out. I dont have Matt's eye for pictures, but i agree the window behind adds to it, basically its a cornucopia of color and much bring you a lot of joy. assassin snails work ace for me on my window planted tank. really love this tank

So I took your advice and trimmed it even more so they have more swimming room. The eggs got fungus so I removed them and did a big water change.

On another note I have a 72 gallon planted tank that I am going to be converting to a amazon biotope. Just trying to find a buyer for the one fish currently residing there.

Quick video I made after the water change, and feeding. For some reason my red cover is always attacking my red melon and when it does it loses the black stripe on its face. It's weird because I'm pretty sure that the red melon is a female because the eruption and the Rafflesia are always fighting for the red melon. The red cover is the only fish that attacks the red melon.

No I need to post details on my filtration I am currently using 3 different canister filters; I know that all of them are rated over a hundred gallons, I'm just not sure what the specifics are without looking.

As for water changes I have been doing them everyday or every other day if I'm really busy, and I usually change 80% of the water.

It's a polypterus , and yes it's a great pet to have, very, very easy to take care of and definitely a conversation starter.
