"Extending" a 48"x18" stand to 48"x24"?

Hi folks!

I have a Aquatic Fundamentals 75/90 Gallon Upright Aquarium Stand, and a member in our local club is selling his 120g (48"x24"x24") tank. I'm thinking of "extending" my stand by adding a 49"x25" plywood on the bottom and at the top of the stand, to cover for the extra 6" of depth. Would this work, or does this sound like a disaster waiting to happen?

You probably should add a couple of 2x4 studs in the back corners. I'm not a carpenter, but that would relieve pressure points that could cause leaks. 2x2 is probably adequate.

While I am not an engineer or a carpenter I think you are better off getting a new stand to fit your 120. Stands are built to support the weight along their perimeter and a tank around it's base. So I would be concerned that the tank would not be correctly supported and having a future leak or collapse of the stand. Remember a stand has to be nice and level to correctly support the tank.
