Not to hijack your thread and I realize that people can name their fish anything they want but has anyone ever had one of these "giants" that was anything out of the ordinary on size? Does anyone have one over 7 inches?

I didn't want to hijack the last post, but I thought it was related. I've got 4 giant floras from Kenny, as well as 4 red turks w/ black halo, also from K. What would be the result of the GF breeding together? From pics and names, I'm assuming the GF are similar to altum floras, which look like a pattern between a turk and a snakeskin. Should I consider crossing with my RT's? Thanks.

Hi John,
I've got a nice snakeskin male, but he only comes in at 7". My original question was about how the G.Floras pairing would turn out. If anyone knows - thanks.
Up until a couple years ago, there was a LFS guy here that was well respected. I was just getting into discus and bought a couple from him. He later bought some of my fry. At one point he had a tank with 4 to 6 very large fish he said were discus that he was selling for someone. I know how easy it is to miss-judge and over estimate size, but these fish were 12 or more inches and 1.5+ thick. As big as a large dinner plate. They were so big, their scales were noticeable, and they were actually less attractive at the time. Could these have been discus? (I need to go to the NADA show, right?)

Hi all. Rick if you google the biggest discus fish in the world there is a link to SD that has a picture of a discus posted by Hans that says that the fish in question was two feet. I have one of Hans jumbos. He measures eight inches. He is not quite a dinner plate but he is certainly a large dessert plate. Rufus
I'm sure we both agree that 8" is no where near 12"? That is a huge difference, and if I saw a 12" discus, you'd better believe I'd take a picture of it with a ruler next to it

I think you missed Hans' punch line
"Just kidding, we believe it when we see it, bring out the rulers (the real ones not the male rulers lol lol lol) "

Giant Floral is a type of blue turquoise. Floral is a common name used in Malaysia to describe a regular striated pattern across the body. You can get the name floral in several forms including giant, altum and pigeon. Floral may also be a synonym of names like carnation, at least they appear very similar in style to me. Giant refers to the eventual size they obtain, and may be thought of as wishful thinking...or perhaps wishful potential...lol. I am going with potential for the moment because i have 8 of them around 4 to 5" sl that i am growing out and i would dearly love an 8" sl discus...... Compared to altum floral, the difference is the shape. The body and fins are higher compared to regular giant floral discus, but the pattern and color is more or less similar.
Crossing with RT's would be ok, though the difference is color is quite dramatic between them. It would probably be better to breed them together or pick another blue turk strain, or even a blue snakeskin to cross with, because the fry will look more consistent in color/type imo.

EDIT: I just realized the discus in my avatar is an altum floral, i no longer have this discus but it was a big fish, maybe 6" or so. But definately not an 8" giant.

Thanks Rod. Yes, I see the GF are more blue based than my RT's. I've got them in together with my HBblueSS/FGB pair. I'll work on the RT's separately.
