Very cool fish, especially in larger groups. Do you mean with Discus or what?

Re: Rainbow fish?
I had them at the time I switched to discus only. They are fast swimmers and jumpers. They would outcompete young or skittish discus for food. Someone recently posted a thread with a huge tank containing wild discus and Boesmani Rainbows. In a huge 250 gallon tank you might be able to create separate feeding areas. In a standard 55 or 75 g the Rainbows might intimidate the Discus at feeding time. I chose to go with all discus because they are so much larger and easier to watch from across a room.

I have two location specific tanks of rainbows at the moment. Melanotaenia boesemani Lake Aytinjo and Melanotaenia boesemani German Strain. Very cool fish.
I wouldn't have them discus because they really thrive at cool temps.

Re: Rainbow fish?
Rainbows are wonderful, but be sure to check the specific requirements, as some need harder water and some do well in soft water comparable to angelfish. Boesemanis and turquoise rainbows like hard water, while the smaller threadfins and praecox do well in planted tanks.

They(old or weak fish first) can be prone to columnaris, even in a well maintained tank if temps are too high and especially if temps raise quickly and stay there.
