My daughter(6yrs), wife and I usually play a few. We rotate Uno, Trouble and Sorry. We recently started playing the age old game of 'marbles'. I think there is some board game by the name but we are using the old draw a circle and knock out the smaller ones with the shooter version.
Settlers of Catan is by far my favourite at the moment!
Ohh, board games are one of my husband's major hobbies. We have a large number that I can recommend.
For cooperative play, Flashpoint! It is a game in which you play as firefighters trying to save the residents of a house before the house burns down. Also, Shadows Over Camelot. In this game you each are a knight from King Arthur's court. You work together to beat several challenges in order to gain good swords before the board earns a certain number of bad swords. But be careful, because one person may be a traitor!
For vindictive play, Survive. In this game you have several people on an island that is crumbling away. In the water there are monsters, sharks, and whales. Your goal is to use little boats to get as many of your people to the mainland before your opponents mess this up for you using the monsters, sharks, and whales.
I also recommend the game, Avalon, because you spend your time trying to use logic to figure out who the traitors in your group are.
And I use a game called, Love Letter, with my students occasionally. In the game you play cards that do different things to try to knock other players out. You are allowed to 'count cards' in order to figure out what cards your opponents may or may not have. In the end, the highest valued card left wins.
I could recommend board games for quite awhile. Let me know if you have questions or would like to hear about more.
Cool stuff Meshell! Do you have a specific place where you buy these board games? I do not know of a local place where boardgames such as the ones you mentioned would be sold.
I am looking for a game to play with my daughter who is 8yrs old. She loves playing clue Jr. and I think she may be ready for the real board game now

We tend to watch a web broad cast entitled, "Shut up and sit down." ( www.shutupandsitdown.com ) Then if we think the game sounds pretty neat we order it off of Amazon and try it out. My husband has a group of people that come over monthly to play board games.
Love Letter is one my seven year old enjoys with us (mentioned above). Another one that is interesting and good for the younger kiddos is the Magic Labyrinth. The board is ML is a maze and you have to remember you way through the maze to get the tokens. And she tends to make losers of us all on a game called Sheriff of Nottingham....but that is partially because we all assume she's innocent and sweet and the game involves bluffing in order to smuggle goods past the Sheriff.
