Default Check Mate! Board Games anyone?

Yeah I know I am dating myself here. I grew up in the age just before video games, and until I was a teenager my parents could not afford those early video games. We played Board Games, Chess and checkers mostly. I started playing Chess when I was 5. My Dad and I played all the time. I now play it with my kids. Its still one of the games we take when we are camping or away.

My other favorite is an ancient board game "IGO" or "GO" (Japan),"WEIQI" (China), and "Baduk" (lKorea) Its probably the worlds oldest board game and has been unchanged the whole time..Its a simple game in its rules, but complex in its execution. I thoroughly enjoy Chess, but playing this Game gives new meaning to strategy! Its highly addicting. I picked it up a few years ago and its just an awesome game.

You can still get board games at the stores, but most are pretty flimsy and plastic. I stumbled across a great online site called Yellow Mountain Imports, http://www.ymimports.com/ when I was looking for a quality Go Board. They have some very nice games, at a fair price.

So do you play board games? Whats your favorites?

In my very early childhood years, right before console games were invented, we had a huge stack of boardgames. For the life of me I can not remember which one I enjoyed the most, but we played many of them fairly frequently. We had the classics like Monopoly of course (the never-ending game), and a few more obscure games that wer also fun. I really hope that my kids will want to sit around a table and play with their old man. However, technology is making this harder and harder. My son, at less than 2yrs old knows how to call his mother, play YouTube cartoons and knows not to drop daddy's phone, lol.

Lol... "Risk", that one brings back memories. Played it one time with an old best friend of mine. After that we were no longer best friends! That game should be banned from highly competitive people! J/k Seriously its a fun a game. Rick if you like the strategy of " Risk", you might enjoy playing Go.

Its loses something in the electronic version, but they are several "go" apps for smart phones, and you can play go"live" against others online http://pandanet-igs.com/communities/pandanet
and hey if you like anime, or have kids that do, "Hikaru NO Go" is free online....http://www.hulu.com/hikaru-no-go/ great show to get the kids interested in the game..Its how I got my kids into it.

I grew up on board games and passed it along to my kids. The selection of games changed along with the kids ages. Ropes and Ladders; Candy-Land, Trouble, Sorry, Battle-Ship (not really a board game), Risk, Life, and Monopoly were some favorites.

Now, when we have a snow day, board games in front of the fireplace are a requirement. It is usually Sorry or Life these days.

resurrection, I know, but my daughter is showing more interest in playing board games. I bought Clue the other day and she absolutely loved it. I'd like to get similar type board games where I can play with her and make her think/strategize about her next move. Any suggestions? I can't check out the link in the OP now since I am at work, but will when I get home. Thanks

When I was in Vietnam, I used to play and compete in Chinese chess (Xiangqi), strategy wise, it's very similar to Chess.
In my country, it was basically school, tutoring, and whatever free time I had I went to play Chinese chess with my dad's friends.

I liked chess growing up, but couldn't find many people who liked to play it . My father loved checkers though, so I played that with him. He was also the one that taught me how to play poker, but that isn't a board game, and that isn't a very good thing to teach a young child, lol. coincidentally enough, I have a poker tournament this Saturday and my dad is rooting me on

My father is like the opposite haha. I love playing poker, but he forbid me from playing. It's funny because he sits at the casino every weekend playing poker from dust to dawn.

My father never wanted to play chess with me. To this day, I think I have never had a match with him.
