Best? Who knows. But I know that it's very good, and very effective for growing out fish fast. BH has a proven itself over time, to be very effective, and relatively cheap. I like it. Downside it can be, and usually is messy. Have to keep up on your WC's, but if you're growing out fish, you have to change water frequently no matter what is fed. I've never known the "guru" who you mention breeding himself, but more of a middleman/broker...Bill

The downside is there are morons that want to sell you something else so they claim its bad for discus even though it has been the main food source for the last 50 or so years.......LOL.

Bill pretty much nailed the situation.

Yup, it has been posted here many times. Marc had a product to sell. Both Bill and John knew who you were referring to.

People are feeding beef heart not because it is the best food for Discus!
    1. It is very cheap.
    2. You can get what ever in to you mix and make it great.
If not beef heart is a lot of work from what I have experienced read. If you are not breeding Discus or cash is not a problem, there are many products out there specially in states which eliminate the drawbacks of beef heart mix imo. As with many food the problems would be to get your discus to eat them and being able to afford them.

I tend to listen to the people who have had years (decades) of success with discus and listen to the folks like John and Bill.
That being said here is my 2c

    Pros:
-A good recipe is probably the best food for a growing out discus.
    -Relatively inexpensive.

    Cons:
-Very messy in the tank and fouls tank water pretty fast. Which makes it hard to use in a tank with substrate.
-Can be difficult to get fish not accustomed to it to eat it at first.
-Messy and time consuming to make.

Don't worry about being much of a cook a Beefheart mix can be a simple thing. I use ground beef heart , chopped fresh spinach and finely chopped King Salmon. I add the salmon just because I have it and they eat it right up.

I use beefheart and it seems to be an worthy addition to their menu. But that said, beefheart became popular years ago when the majority of fish food on the market were pretty next to useless. I think now with all the high quality flake and pellet foods on the market not to mention fdbw, ect. that beefheart is not necessry. IMO

I still do not believe BH can be substituted for something else in the market yet. BH bulks up discus like nothing else out there, at least IME

I've tried about every processed food out there, I prefer a beefheart mix the best. Although I hate to say it. My fish always seem to look, do and grow the best with a beefheart mix. I imagine you could find a supplier of said mix locally, negating the need to make your own.

Thank you guys for the positive reinforcement, I'm going to look around and see what I can find before trying to mix it up in my own kitchen and potentially creating a biohazard.

I will say one thing , I don't know where you guys buy your beef heart but mine is definitely not cheap . Usually 14$-15$ per heart.
