If it is safe for you it should be fine. For years and years people just used clay pots.

I was wondering if you can just use a nice glass decor jar as a breeding cone?

Probably not good to use. Eggs won't stick to it right and the fish probably won't even recognize it as a spawning surface. Not to mention the transparency won't allow the parents to feel secure. Terra cotta has been used for decades. IMO spend a few dollars and get one of Barbs beautiful cones.
In correct. I haev had lots of pairs that laid on the side of the tank. I have used PVC pipes stuck to pieces or tile. When discus want to spawn they will fins a place to do it. Having said that I do keep cones in the tanks with my pairs. If you get some Barb makes very nice ones.

One of my pairs right now has been laying their eggs under an arch of driftwood. Hilarious to watch.

I had used 4"pvc, old glass bottle oil lamps(fill with sand), black funnels upside down, traffic orange cones , more professional clay cones and of course Barb's cones.
They all work for me but Barbs cones were preferable for my fish and that makes it for me.
