Not even 4 weaks in and if l'm not imagining things they have grown well over 1.5cm (5/8 inch)
Some of them are displaying patterns and colours better than others. Is this normal since they're from the same batch?

I would expect both a difference in when they start coloring up and what they ultimately look like when they're grown out, even being from the same batch. Not completely unlike non-identical human twins, you'll see a lot of similarities but also some differences. Anxious to see what they look like another month or so from now.

    Thanks guys.
Once they get a little bigger, l'll reduce the group down from 18 to 12...any thoughts on that?
I'll try to put some updates on here from time to time....l can't wait to see how they turn out as well.

you may start reducing the group right now. There is no need to keep the smaller ones if you are going to get rid of them anyway.

Did you say somewhere how big a tank you have them in?

Those are some very beautiful discus!

Do you mind sharing what kind of care you are providing for these great results? What are you feeding, and how often? Water change schedule?

Thanks, I'm just trying to learn as much as I can so I can start with discus as well as possible.

That's a good point, but l'm really enjoying seeing the progress of this group. This is the first time that l've started with such a large group, but l noticed how quickly they settled into their new tank, and even how much more aggressive they are come feeding time.
With selecting which ones to take out, l'm not going to let size influence my decision, but rather shape and condition.....my end goal is to end up with 6 to 8 fish in this display tank, and l also want to have a go at breeding a pair in another tank, and raise the young to adults....we'll see how it pans out

    Thanks for your interest.

I've had a few goes at raising juvenile discus, and l think the most challenging time was when l took part in the Australian leg of the first discus challenge. Lots of feeds in a bare bottom tank, and 50% water changes every day made good for the group. But large water changes meant that l had to use aged water at a similar temp...l did that, and it worked.

I'm toning it down with this group, and since the tank is in our living area, l wanted to pretty it up just a little. I've added a little white washed sand and a couple pieces of driftwood, one of which has a plant attached to it. I'm running a canister filter, and able to maintain ph at around 6.8. Our tap water is soft here in Melbourne and the ph is around 7 straight out of the tap. So approx' 30% water changes every 4th or 5th day straight out of the tap ( and treated with a little 'prime') works for me without altering the tank temperature too much. I keep the temp at 27 degrees, and it usually drops a couple during the water changes.

Feeds are smallish but varied, and they may get 6 to 8 serves through out the day. I start with granules in the morning and 2 blocks of beef heart soon after. I have an automatic feeder set up which will dump another small serve of different granules around mid day ( and satisfies me that they've had a feed if l'm not home ) Mid afternoon they will receive a good dose of Freeze Dried Black Worms, and then later on another 2 blocks of beef heart. Late afternoon l may give them a block of frozen brine shrimp, as a treat...l don't think it has much nutritional value but they love it. I finish of late afternoon with another small dose of Freeze Dried Black Worms, usually an hour or so before the lights automatically turn off....GEEZ...l'm glad l toned it down a little

You feed all of that food daily and only hangs the water every 4th or 5th day...?

Did I read that correctly ?

Hi Phil. Yes you did read correctly. All the food is consumed quickly, though l do vacuum up lots of poop. I imagine water changes will become more frequent as they get bigger.
