I removed 6 discus from my tank today, leaving the remaining 12 more room to grow and prosper.
It wasn't too hard picking the first two, then found myself doubting which ones to pick. I kept a mixture of small, and large fish thinking the smaller ones may be females?
As much as l tried to avoid spooking the fish in the tank as l slowly and carefully tried to catch them, it still happened, leaving some fish marked, hopefully to clear up over the coming days.
I measured one of the smallest fish as l transferred it into its bag, and was happy knowing l had much larger ones still in the tank.

I wonder how long before l have to remove another 4, to be left with 8 remaining fish?......I really don't like seeing them go

Thanks Al. That's real nice coming form you and much appreciated. You know me....l'm fully committed once l start something, and l promise that there will be lots of updates to follow whatever the outcome.

Thanks Ryan The choices l made for keeping them was based mainly on that rather than size. Only more time, water changes and quality food will determine the final outcome. I must also add that starting with quality fish is of most importance for the end desired result in my opinion

I've just pulled out of storage another tank, and all the gear that goes with it. Its the 35 gallon tank l used for the grow out during the first 'Simply Discus Challenge'. I'll start the fishless cycle soon. l have my eyes on some Blue Diamonds that my local discus breeder and now good friend has coming up for sale. This tank is set up in the bathroom and will be bare bottom with one sponge filter.
When l said that l was getting back into discus, l didn't know l would be going this far. Where does it end?

I went to visit my friend the discus breeder/boat builder today to check out some of his fish. I really liked the look of some of the blue diamonds he has but couldn't resist taking some snaps of a few of his other fish. He is running over 20 breeding pairs at the moment and it was great seeing his fish with different stages of young....I ended up spending a few hours in his fish room helping him with feeding, water changes, and other day to day maintenance....then l spent a couple more hours helping him build a mould for his boat's hard top.....two of my favorite things

Thinning out the ones with weak chins was a good choice, especially since it's a trait easily picked out that bugs you.

    Thanks Keith
At the time l wasn't sure that weak chins was bad or not. Hope l made the right choices
Yes I did read Larry's cabin thread and was very jealous, but as Pat mentioned l think l'll be crying 'uncle' way way before l get to that....but l do have just the spot for such cabin....just in case

I'm still waiting on my second tank to cycle before I pick up a group of 12 juvenile blue diamonds....Can't wait.

In the meantime the group of 12 remaining spotted eruptions are taking advantage of the extra room, and a batch of home made beef heart mix. One of the discus has abrasions from my attempt to catch them back when l removed some, which l hope will completely clear as it has a really nice shape.

Feeds have not changed that much, but the 30% water changes are being done every 3 days now. The largest of the group is well over 5 inches with the smallest at 4 1/2 inches or so. Some squabbling is starting to occur within the group, and their colors and patterns are developing nicely.

It will be interesting to see how they turn out as adults.

I will be removing another 4 of them down the track, but l'm hoping it wont be for a couple more months

Check out some more pictures, and another short 1 minute video clip of the group
