Hi Shibly, the only way to be sure of the gender is to see the breeding tube of the fish in question. The females tube is squared off and blunt at the end and the males is a bit smaller with a pointy end.
Pat
who can tell me the gender of RED PANDA (Right most) and the Red Melon (next to Red Panda) ? Please help...

Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
No one can really tell 100%, you have to see it lay eggs (then its a female100%), if a Discus fertilizes eggs then its a male 100%. This is the only real way.
All the rest of the ways, looking at shape, fin shape, pointy fins, etc.
As Discus Hans says, "this is just gambling".
I have personally had two pigeons I could have sworn both were females, 7 months later they pair and wigglers come out of there first batch, guess I was wrong...lol
Even the experienced super pros can't really tell 100%, you can only guess and hope for the best.
In saying that your asking for us to " guess", I would suggest if the top fin is pointy and the bottom fin is pointy as well, chances are it could be a male, but you never know.
So happy guessing and just wait for them to attempt a spawn, then you will have a better idea.
Matt, you can 100% tell the gender by looking at the breeding tube.

Per the others, the only way to tell with certainty is after the fish has reached sexual maturity and the breeding tubes or genitalia are visible, which from the looks of this fish may still be at least 6 months away.
Are you planning on trying to pair this one up with a proven male/female?
BTW, these are nice, healthy looking fish.
Maybe you can, I can't... Many others can't.
I have had many tubes look like females and the darn discus is a male.
Lol
if u can see the breeding tube it is pretty easy to determine whether a discus is male or female. wrigglers will confirm if the pair is fertile.

Most of the time but not always. I posted pics (on a different forum) of one I had with real good shots of the breeding tube. Had me stumped. I had 6 or 7 of my most knowledgeable friends look at it. They were split down the middle. Half said male and the other half said female.

I have a pair, when they breed they both have a tube that sticks out and they look exactly alike, and I'm not kidding!
You have to see who lays eggs and who shoots nothing (well actually not nothing, it's sperm, it looks pretty much like nothing...lol). But you get my point.
I have another pair, the male tube looks more like a female breeding tube then the female. No wonder why everyone gets confused...lol... It's a discus conspiracy against sexing!
Time to move on.
There can be times where a female-female pair is deceiving you and making you think its a male-female working pair. Has anyone experienced this ?

well that is good to know! so far i have always guessed right but if the tubes can be questionable i can see how it would be difficult.
the only time the tube was hard to determine was on my biggest male discus. his tube was so large it appeared to be female. but everything else about him looked male.
