Hatchet fish are good discus-tank-mates, but they're notorious jumpers, so you need to keep the tank well-covered !

Wow great recommendations!! Love the idea of Hatchet Fish, I do however have some small gaps in my lid though. Those red coral pencil fish are stunning! But I don't think I've ever seen those at any Lfs??

you're likely not going to see pencil fish at your local LFS. wetspottropcalfish has three different type right now and they are great quality. the brown tail pencilfish look great in a biotope

Although it's not a problem (much) in discus tanks, keep in mind that most hatchetfish from LFS tend to come preloaded with ick... make sure you follow your quarantine regimen before you add them.

    Two I would highly avoid:
    1. Killifish (aggresive and eat a ton, competing with discus)
    2. live bearers such as mollies, platies, guppies, etc. (laundry list of issues)

Back when I kept a few other fish with my discus glass cats were on my list to roam the top of the tank.

I always wanted to keep pencilfish with discus. Never have, but I loved the idea of doing so.

    +1 hatchets
and they definitely jump, i got good and scooping them off the floor with a credit card. never lost one to jumping and hitting floor, guess the slime coat is a nice cushion

they look nice in a school, and +1 about lfs and ich. though, the petco types seem MUCH worse with ich than other lfs, e.g. non chain. IME.
