Stan, I did all the steps mentioned in your first link. But your second link just had a simple button assignment. Which one is correct?

As far as focusing is concerned you can check and be sure that when you press the shutter release the camera makes no attempt to focus. When you press the AF-L button the camera focuses. There is a way in some cameras to have both focus which some people use (but not all cameras can do).

Thanks Stan, I will check that. Remembering to press the AF-L button is definitely something I am having to remember.

Give it a few days with the camera and it will become second nature, I promise.
Everybody gets a little frustrated at first, then most swear by it.

I told Pat that it gets some getting used to. I was so set in my ways when I learned about this method that I simply couldn't (wouldn't) adapt to it. I still want to give it another shot, but breaking out of an old habit is tough.

With today's cameras, and such good continuous focus tracking, it just makes sense to separate the shooting from the focusing. I don't think I could go back to the old way now.
Yes you will miss a few shots at first, but it is well worth the effort.

BTW two new Nikon cameras announced today: D5 and D500.
I need to play the lottery.

Next powerball is upwards of 450mil Stan, but don't bother as I plan on winning it.

The little I've messed with separating the focus and shutter I've liked it. It is different, but It seems to flow well to me. There will be no mistake of accidentally pushing the shutter and throwing my focus when I want to get a shot.

Stan, what do you think of the D500? It looks like it takes same lens as the D7000. Hubby has been talking about a new body

Pat just from glancing at it, it seems pretty impressive on the surface. The thing has 153 auto focus points which is absolutely insane given that the top Canon bodies are using 61 max. If they hit the nail on the head with proper cross type points (I believe it has 99 cross type?) in a 153 point array it will be a huge win in that area. The ISO ranges keep getting out of this world, you'd hardly ever need it but they make sure you have it. But if you can get clean images at the higher ranges it's a win. Dual memory slot, which I always wish I had...will have on my next body. Ultra HD 4k video at 3 frame rates, jealous I don't have this. Looks like a solid camera, will have to see the tests and reviews when they start coming out.

Right now all of the Canon guys I know are impressed with the D500, without seeing full tests yet of course. They fear it may sink Canon's 7D Mk II body.

If my significant other is actually talking about a new body, you'd better believe it would be on order already, haha. That body looks mighty nice, I must say.

Well I would have to read more about it.
It does have the focusing of the new D5, the MP and the FPS. Being a Dx body, it should be a nice bird lens to get the extra length. All Nikon lenses fit on all Nikon bodies. Some are designated to have been configured for Dx. Whatever lenses you have been using with the Dx D7000, Pat, will be fine.
If you are thinking about an Fx body, the D750 is very nice. It does not have the same 10 fps.

Matt, when you win the Powerball tonight, I expect a little Nikon love.
In fact we should make a pact, If any one of us wins 500mill. we will buy the others a camera of their choice.....
