I am looking to set up an aging barrel. the problem is it will be in the basement and the tank is on the first floor. can anyone suggest a good pump that can handle about a 12 foot head pressure? that's what i figure it is from the bottom of the barrel to the lip of the tank. I am not too concerned about a quick w/c as i can leave the pump running.
thanks

Thanks for the reply, i was looking for something submersible, which i should have stated up front. i came across this model. http://www.amazon.com/EcoPlus-728325...ct_top?ie=UTF8 and according to the manufacturer it has a 13 ft head at about 130 gph.

This is what I use and I have a tank on the 1st floor as well with my water barrel in the basement, pumps like a work horse no problem! (600 gph @ 15ft)
There are larger pumps too this company makes.
First one I had I purchased 2nd hand and lasted 2 years, they also had it for 3 years before in a pond.
I just replaced it 7 months ago and it still pumps like its brand new.

barrel in basement, gets to tank via 75' garden hose.
about 15' head i think
This is what I used when I did w/c from my storage tank. It's submersible and has an auto shutoff if it goes dry. 1850 gph at 10 ft. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...rch_detailpage
They also sell this one now which is cheaper. 1550 GPH at 10 ft. http://www.amazon.com/Wayne-VIP50-Th...r+Removal+Pump
I actually had 2 of these. I would put one in my main tank to transfer water out into my yard or bathtub and another was in my 150g rubbermade storage tank transfering water into the tank. I had both run at the same time that way the water level was constant and water changes were faster.

Check out Harbour Freight. I use one of the small fountain pumps 34$ and it pushes 20' head easily
I have the same set up for my display tank. I have a 10 ft. max lift and I use a mag pump 9.5. Not the cheapest but very dependable and plenty of power. I also use wireless outlets and one remote to drain and fill my tank.

I've been using Mag Drive pumps for at least 6 years without a lick of problems, haven't done a thing to them. Pretty sure they're 7s.

I think this is the 1 from harbor freight http://www.harborfreight.com/620-gph...ump-68393.html.
thanks for all the suggestions. i have my homework cut out for me. i have 1 other question, do you use a standard garden hose or a drinking water one?
thanks

Don't take the chance on a standard garden hose, you'll be royally POed if you wipe out all your fish because you didn't spend an extra $5-$10 on a water potable hose.

+1.
Here's a cheap option for you:

I have that hose and it does the job well.
