Fancy betta and bettas from the Betta splendens complex basically require the same temperatures as discus. Do people keep betta in conditions not ideal for betta, sure. Just like people keep discus in conditions not ideal for discus. Real discus people don't like and and will say something. So will real betta people. Please don't keep a fancy betta in an unheated tank (unless you live in a neotropical zone).

However, you can keep many of the other wild betta species at cooler temperatures, between 70 and 77 degrees fahrenheit. I've kept many of the species from the Coccina complex and they are awesome dwarf betta species.

    Male betta hendra.

Too many good things: a small group of a wild betta species like Betta brownorum for example (there are a dozen or so others that are colorful and get along in groups, or, a small group of killifish like Aphyosemion australe or Aphyosemion striatum - some that get along well in groups and are exceedingly colorful and active.

    Very nice!

Danio margaritatus, aka celestial pearl danios. I think a nice school of these guys would set off any planted 29g. If youd like some, I breed them & would gladly kick ya a school.
Have you gotten your hands wet today?

I second the vote on the pea puffers. Interesting and personable fish. A small plant with medium sized leaves is a good addition with the pea puffers as like to have afternoon naps in the leaves.

You need more sand and perharps try other plants that don't grow much relative to your tank size.
