    Default Nhumunda "Brilliant Blue" Heckels

A week ago this past Saturday Ryan and I went to John's place to checkout the digs. There was no plan to take home anything but I saw the Heckels and couldn't resist. Brought home four Nhumunda "Brilliant Blue" heckels and couldn't be happier then them. Thanks John for some very nice fish.

Phil, John's place is a fairly typical Florida warehouse, not AC-ed and water everywhere but the important thing was how the fish looked and they looked good. John's is super nice and we were there a couple hours. I actually sent the fish home with Ryan as he had an empty tank and I picked them up this past weekend (Thanks Ryan). The fish are still quite shy and I am seriously thinking about getting a couple more. John had just gotten a bunch of new heckels in and they too looked super nice. For now I just plan on enjoying them.

They look absolutely wonderful Pat...shape and all. That center bar should pop once they settle in.

Thanks for sharing your thought process pat. You know I love to hear the whys and all that which go I to our decision to set up tanks. Sounds like you will be back soon to add to the group! We're John's other heckles in qt and that's why you didn't get more ?

You are so lucky to get to go and hand pick!

John had just gotten four tankfuls of heckels the day before our trip and so they weren't ready to go to new homes yet. John won't sell you anything unless he's sure it's acclimated and doing well. Trust me, I asked.

Now that collecting season has wound down the warehouse wasn't full by any means but there was still plenty to see. I spent a lot of time going back and forth, trying to decide what I wanted to take home with me. I could have easily come home with 20 fish. I settled on four wild discus and two large Uaru amphiacanthoides. I left behind a small Japura Green and a couple Tapajos Blues that I should have just bit the bullet on while I was there. He also had altums in a few sizes, including huge ones that were probably 6 - 8" tall, but someone had come in a few days prior and bought the whole tankful. It's probably a good thing because I would have been highly tempted. Large altums don't usually do well after import but these were in great shape and John said they'd been there for three weeks with no issues. Even he was surprised.

Pat's game plan was a bit different than mine. She stuck to all one type, I brought home one each of four different types (no heckels). I've not really worked with wild discus so it's just a trial run to see how they do for me.

I'm glad we made the trip. I've been buying from John for years and it was nice to finally meet him and see some wilds in person. It's also always nice to see Pat and take a roadtrip. This is our second one. Hopefully my driving doesn't terrify her.
