Default DIY projects... NOT fish related.

So I know we have a bunch of creative people here and I know that theres a bunch of things people do that are not fish related (gasp! Really?) I'm always building something or re-using something in a different way. I really enjoy making old things useful again. I thought it'd be cool to have a thread where you can express your creative side in things other than our fish hobby (we have a section for that if its fish related)

My latest DIY project revolves around my love of cooking outdoors. A few years ago I was given an old woodstove . It unfortunately didn't fit in my fireplace so I put it outside by my firepit. I used once in a while on windy days. But its largely been unused . I also really love cast iron cooking. I like to scavenger at old antique shops and fleamarkets for old rusty cast iron cookware. Take it home, sand it and re-season it. Its perfect for campfire cooking...but its hard to control the heat on a campfire so if you are doing a slow cook, you often have to let the fire die down. Well I got to thinking about using the woodstove in some way. ..I could cook on top of it, but its not very efficient....I needed to make an oven of sorts... and so I eyed a pile of bricks I had and decided to build a prototype and if it works maybe I'll use mortor or maybe I will not. Most of my projects involve working with what i have.. If I wanted to spend money, I'd just go an buy something.

    So far so good...

Btw.. that dutch oven cost all of $5.00 ..it was ugly! Rusty. A little sandpaper and steel wool. Some vegetable shortening to "season" it and "wow"what a great pot! Those things go for $80-$150 new!

our dutch oven has legs and a lid that you can put coals in. We put coals under it and on top and let it go works good. Is the heat just from the fire below or is there a door that directs some up to the little cubby hole you made?

Funny enough, I was thinking of making a flower planter bbq smoker. I saw it on YouTube and I said, "well that's a great idea!". I'll try to dig it up and share it. I should tackle that project soon.

    Yours looks nice Al.

The heat is just from the fire below. This wood stove is solid cast iron even the top so it conducts the heat nice and evenly.. the brick oven cooks the potatoes perfect.

Only thing I want to do is find a piece of flat stock steel for a sliding door..

I am a little worried it might be too showy and flashy for my yard though.
