    Default critique my sump

after seeing a few sump threads, im beginning to doubt mine

    here it is

    31*18*12".

first chamber has the heater and inlet, the water goes under the first baffle, through grades of foam, the foam is lifter off the bottom with egg crate with pipe legs, ontop of the foam is a mix of 2l matrix, 1l of eheim substrate balls, 1l of ceramic rings then god knows how much alphagrog.

then drops in to the return chamber.

ive ordered a mesh bag to put all the loose media in for ease of cleaning.

my breeder told me to use this method but now thjnking the first layer mite get filthy

Seems like it would be a pain to clean the foam with it on the bottom. I think a baffle so that the water flows downward with foam on top would be much easier to maintenance. Jmho

I'm currently in process of planning and building my own as well. I am going to use 3 layers of poret but they will be on top so easy to clean. Apparently poret does not need to be cleaned often but when that time comes I'd like it to be easily. accessible. All loose media I will have in bags or a rubber maid with holes drilled so I can just lift the whole thing out at once.

yeah ive bought a big mesh bag, going to put all the loose media in that, then the foam can come out for a clean,

as i dont yet have fish i dont know how quick ita going to need cleaning, i will monitor nitrates and see,

it depends how much food makes it down the overflow into the sump,

i may loose the first baffle all together.

then use the foam side ways to what they are now

You could do that or make the first baffle so that the overflow fills that first section the spills over the baffle to flow downward through foam then through bio below

I did mine so the layers are vertical so i can just pull them up to clean and rinse-- if that makes sense.
