    Default Redline barb with Discus

Does anyone keep this fantastic fish with their discus ? How have you found them ? Any pitfalls ?

    Thanks

u prob mean these guys ?

i had a group of 7 huge ones in my 210g - they get large and need a lot of swimmig room. i considered putting them with my discus but they are very fast swimmers, always on the move, and i felt it would disrupt the discus too much so i didnt mix them. lots of ppl do mix them with discus tho.

one word of caution - i recently rehomed a lot of my fish including my group of 7 toroedo barbs. it was a most horrible and tragic experience... 5 of the barbs "slimed" themselves to death. they must have been so frightened during the move that they released slime in defense, it clogged their gills and mouths and filled my net so much that water couldnt pass thru the mesh. i tried to pull the jelly out of their mouths and gills and place them back in their main tank but it was no use... 5 barbs died of suffocation... i had never seen anything like it! so be very gentle when moving them, wouldnt want that to happen to yours...

That sounds awful, all the reasearch points to not adding them, temp, flow, size etc etc.
Will have to look at alternatives . . .
    Thanks for the reply

How about Lemon Tetras or Red Eye Tetra? Both work well in Discus.

Torpedo barbs are beautiful fish for sure.Like mentioned they do get big and are very fast swimmers. That is the reason I removed my group of 11 from the discus tank.Discus being slow and them being fast, just made things look out of place.

I have a group of 6 in my 240 with out one issue. They eat last, and I would only have them in a large tank with lots of room to swim back and forth. They are great fish though.

I agree with a larger long tank. They do need lots of swimming space.A 4 foot tank will hold them but crowd them.A school would even make a nice center piece fish.

I had these in with my discus, but they did not respond well to large water changes.

It must have been your water. They didn't mind my water changes of 80%.They need well oxygenated water.Maybe the O2 was down in your new water.I don't have them in with my discus any longer;they seemed to move too fast. Not that the discus minded it,it just looked off to me with that mix.

PS,,I don't think they will do great with any 80% WC straight from the tap due to the gasses.

I only do 30-50% w/c straight city tap water treated with safe. No issues in the 2 years.
