Okay to not feed discus for 2 wks while on vacation?

I'm going on a vacation for 2 weeks and have 6 adult discus in a 125g tank. I have someone checking on the house, but not able to look after my discus. All of them are healthy. If a do a 90% water change before I leave will the discus be okay? Or should I invest in an automatic feeder? Thanks.

Hi Ted, you will not want to feed your fish while you are gone if water changes are not done. That will hurt your water quality and perhaps your fish. Instead fast your fish three days prior to leaving, this will help to empty their bodies of poop. Then do your large water change and no lights while you are gone. Be check to have your house sitter check on your fish. If one dies have the sitter remove the fish. Leaving the fish in the tank will spike the ammonia which could harm the remaining fish.

I just came home from 2.5 weeks abroad and my 10 juvies were fine. Might affect their size of course, but yours are adults.

I would follow Pats advice and you should be just fine...

I have gone away for a few weeks at times and usually things are fine...

I don't fast for as long as Pat, I usually only do a 1-2 day fast. Make sure you do 2 back to back big water changes though... the day before you elave and day of if possible or at least the night before you go, then keep tank quiet and go on your way. You have a big tank and not much stock so you should be just fine...

They will be just fine....feed moderately on return or with caution as they might not eat the same amount after 2 weeks of fasting.
