What size tank? What are the stocking levels?

Sounds to me like you have a nice amount of filtration already. Most people only use one of those methods so you have a big canister and sponges, keep up with water changes and your filter maintenance and you should be more than good.

But a prefilter sponge over the intake and clean it regularly.

Any kind of filtration does well. No matter how over filtered a tank is you still have to do daily WC if you want your fish to grow well. Personally, I prefer sponges to canisters due to their ease of maintenance.

2 options, turn off the filters when feeding or use prefilters during feeding.

Regardless what kind of filtration you used but it's the frequency of water change and how many % is the most important. I'm using both sponge filter and canister but I still do large water change 80%-100% daily.

This is a pre filter - very cheap and easy to use, will keep your filter very clean and solve your beefheart and food suction issue... or as rick suggested, shut the filters feed, then fire them back up..

I use an FX6. I always turn off my filter during feeding, back on after the siphon/cleaning. Besides this I replaced the intake tube with another that has a sponge attached, which I got from my LPS. Before I did both of those things so much excess food/waste went into it I would have had to clean it daily to keep my Discus healthy. Now it stays perfectly clean of all this.
