Default Who's eating my Cardinals ?

    Hi everyone !

New in the fish world and even more in the Discus world !

I'm having a problem with my cardinals.... THEY DISAPPEAR ! Or get eaten....or die and then get eaten....

I have a 75 gallons planted tank with:
    Discus
    Geophagus
    Pleco
    Black Lancer
and Cardinals. I had 20 but now I'm down to 2 !!! And I didn't find any dead bodies

I'm guessing it's not my water since my Discus would be the first to go.

But could it be the water temperature ? I hold it a 86F

    Does anyone have an idea

    Thx for the help

Never have a Geophagus nor Black Lancer so I can't speak for them. I vote for Discus.

Are you sure they are not in the filter? It's weird to not find any part of the body, in my case, I was always able to find an eye/part of body/skin.

    Black Lancer Catfish 98%
    Pleco 1.7%
    Discus .2%
    Other tetra .09%
    Geophagus.01%

That is the breakdown of who is eating your tetra. Catfish are predators FYI. Some Plecos are predators depending on the type, they are also catfish.

Now had you said who is eating my shrimp, geos would have topped the list.

Discus gladly hunt cardinals, especially in dim light.

As Ryan said it is quite common for discus to eat cardinals.

I have kept Cardinals and Discus together a lot. In my experience they always get eaten by the discus. Wild caught seem to do more damage on them then domestics and of course the larger the fish the more the munch them. I had 100 last about a year before the last one disappeared.

My discus prefer emperor tetras, which are bigger, but slower moving.

I was told by one and all that Cardinals are great with Discus and not to get Neon's as they can't handle the heat and are small enough to be Discus chow.

If Cardinals will also become Discus food, then which dither fish would be good in a Discus tank?

I go with rummynose tetras and rams. The rummynose will also get eaten until they get bigger than the discus' mouth. Rummyose also schools, unlike cardinals. Rams are immune.

I am expecting to start with smaller discus, who should not be able to eat tetras. However will they still eat them when they grow up.
Basically what I am asking is whether it makes an difference if they grow up with the cardinals or whether it wont matter and once they are big enough to eat them, they will.

I am asking as Cardinals aren't cheap in my area and I don't want to invest in a bunch of them if they are end up as Discus chow.
