    Default Sick Discus

    DISEASE QUESTIONNAIRE

    Problem

    1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?

I noticed one of my 7 discus was staying away from the others a day ago, today I notice on his lower fins what looks to be like some white stringy fuzz. Other than staying more in the corner and not coming for food he looks fairly normal, he has his stress bars showing which are normally not there.

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).

It looks as if there is a cloudy substance on his lower fins. He is not eating like usual and stays more in the corner sometimes looking up towards the surface, other times he is more to the bottom. Doesn't seem to be flashing but it does look as if he did scrape against something

    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

I haven't given any medication yet. I keep on hand ..kordon rid ich plus..metroplex..prazipro..cupramine. .furan2. .triplesulpha. . Malachite green just because I live in a small town where I do not have access to meds. But haven't given anything yet.

    Tank/Water

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.

80 gallon with 7 discus roughly 3 to 4.5 inch and 1 golden nugget pleco. They have been in this tank about a year and a half with no new additions.

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).
I do 90% water change every Sunday adding seachem safe as directed.

    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?

1.5 years. It is bare bottom with smaller piece of driftwood on bottom for pleco.

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.
    No it is not aged

    8. Parameters and water source;
City tap water pH of 7

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

    - temp 82_____

    - ph ___6.8__

    - ammonia reading __0__

    - nitrite reading _0___

    - nitrate reading 15____

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    - well water ____

    - municipal water ___yes_

    - RO water ____

    9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.

    No

    10. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can.

Omega one tubifex. New life spectrum discus formula. Some omega one flakes.

    11. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.

You have posted in the right section for help.Your nitrate levels are high for Discus. Aim for levels of 5 ppm I recommend you start with a few large water changes for next few days. No need to use any medication for the time being.

Thank you for the reply, the test was done at the end of the weekly water change. I do 90% every Sunday but will step it up some more. After yesterday's water change later on in the evening I noticed what looked to be webs hanging from the effected fishes gills. I did a salt dip for 20 minutes and the webs seem to have disappeared after that but he still doesn't want to eat and pretty much stays facing the corner and looking upwards. I will do another 90% water change tomorrow again and wipe down the sides as I always do and see if any improvement.

Well obviously water changes weren't enough, did another 90 % water change last night the sick discus even tho it didn't look as if it had lost any weight fins were not clamped no flashing but still had some what looked like webs hanging from it. This morning it was up near the top as usual. Come home now and it was laying on the bottom dead..what ever it was I hope the others don't or haven't got it whatever it was.
