Update: my fish is now hanging out in the front of the tank,but he is still breathing heavy. I tried pulling him out and putting a Q-tip of peroxide on his head because I didn't know what else to do. BR aren't as cooperative as discus he jumped and landed back in the tank. I did get a little swab on him though.
Pat, it's been more than 24 hours. What do I try next?

I changed the water this morning and added salt. He is imo looking much better i.e. Color better wound appears to be healing, but he is still breathing heavy. Now I'm wondering if I should've left him in epsom salt? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I really think the gunk that came out after large wc was the culprit. It happened after I turned the pumps back on.
